The Transplant Institute at BIDMC, a major teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, has gained national recognition for our scientific contributions, our fellowship training programs, and our efforts to increase deceased and living organ donation.
This is a day shift position where the incumbent would likely begin working 5 eight-hour days and can move to 4 ten-hour days upon being fully oriented. This position also has the potential for one remote day per week.
Once fully trained, our Nurse Coordinators also work remotely to cover the on-call needs of the clinic on a rotation schedule. While on-call, the coordinators cover patient triage calls and organ offer calls.

Job Description:

The BIDMC Nursing Mission is to build on a legacy of nursing excellence by caring with compassion, advancing the art & science of nursing, and advocating for the health of patients, families, and communities. In coordination with transplant physicians and surgeons, The Nurse Coordinator-Specialty Sv RN provides care to transplant recipients and live donors throughout all phases of transplantation or donation including evaluation, pre-transplant/donation, the transplant/donation surgery and post-transplant/donation. Serves as the primary contact for patients; provides ongoing education to the patient, monitors the patient status throughout the process and coordinates care with all members of the transplant team. Ensures that the responsibilities associated with the role coordinator are carried out in a manner that meets all regulatory requirements for a transplant program. Training, evaluation and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader to the department.

Essential responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Collaborates with physicians and other health care providers to coordinate the care for patients from referral/consultation to discharge /follow up. Assists with pre-authorization process.
  • Serves as contact and facilitator to receive consults and patient information. Coordinates and ensures all patient scheduling including but not limited to consultation, diagnostic and treatment procedures.
  • Gathers information for history and physical. Performs and documents evaluations and assessments of patient. Assists in ordering labs, x-rays, and diagnostic procedures.
  • Works in collaboration with surgeons and physicians in educating the patients and their families in medical care. Assists in development of patient/family educational materials. Participates in patient rounds and case conferences.
  • Updates clinical knowledge and skills through consultation, formal and informal education, and review of literature for self and clinical team. Provides leadership for process improvement related to the care of these patients.
  • Makes and answers patient phone calls, both pre and post treatment/procedure, from patients referring providers, and outside facilities (hospitals, rehabilitation centers, physician offices).

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree in Nursing required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred.
  • License Registered Nurse required., and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required.
  • 1-3 years related work experience required.
  • American Heart Associate - Basic Life Support Certificate
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in specialty service preferred.

  • Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service and staff training to meet customer service standards and expectations for the assigned unit(s). Resolves service issues in the assigned unit(s) in a timely and respectful manner.

Age based Competencies: Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Neonatal:Birth to 6 months, Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 - over.

Close work (paperwork, visual examination), Color vision/perception, Visual monotony, Visual clarity > 20 feet, Visual clarity <3 feet, Hot/Cold, Sharp/Dull, Smell, Conversation, Monitoring Equipment, Telephone.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. Job is physical in nature and employee needs to stand and/or move around through the majority of their shift.
This job requires constant walking, standing, Endurance-working up to 3-4 hours without a break,frequent bending neck, bending waist, twisting neck, twisting waist, Power Grasping using both hands, Fine Manipulation using both hands, Pushing/Pulling using both hands, Keyboard use, Reaching-above shoulder height, Reaching-below shoulder height, Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs, Pull up and/or reposition patient weighing up to 100 pounds without assistance, Pull up and/or reposition patient weighing up to 250 pounds with assistance, Pushing items weighing up to or more than 100 lbs, Push a wheelchair or wheeled bed containing a patient weighing up to 250 pounds, with assistance.
