Job description

Idaho National Laboratory's Power and Energy System's group is seeking a graduate student studying nuclear engineering or a closely related field. The student will support evaluating designs and simulations to extract thermal and electric power from nuclear power plants to produce non-electric products, such as hydrogen, formic acid, ammonia and plastics. Ideally, this position will support both modeling and physical validation through laboratory tests. Experience programming using Python or Matlab is desired as well as experience using hand tools. The student will support preparation of a poster and formal project reports.
Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate student studying Nuclear Engineering or closely related field
  • Experience or coursework in Python or Matlab

  • Have the ability to pass a background check
  • Enrolled full time student status at an accredited college or university (undergraduate, graduate, PhD)
  • Possess a minimum overall 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Possess authorization to work in the U.S.

INL Internships Overview:
INL is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's mission in nuclear energy research, science, and national defense. With more than 5,000 scientists, researchers, and support staff, the laboratory works with national and international governments, universities and industry partners to discover new science and development technologies that underpin the nation's nuclear and renewable energy, national security, and environmental missions. INL hosts over 450 undergraduate and graduate students each year to support INL's mission. Opportunities for interns at INL range from nuclear engineering to cybersecurity and include non-scientific positions in various operations and business subject areas.
Interns will spend the first week of their assignment working with their mentor to outline their work scope and to secure resources for a successful internship. For the next several weeks, the mentor will provide considerable program assistance and mentorship to the intern. In addition to regular activities, interns are encouraged to attend weekly seminars, tours and community events crafted with career development in mind. Completion of a final project is highly recommended and can be completed through a variety of mediums - a traditional poster, electronic presentation or video.

Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and the selected candidates will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on degree field and level of education.
Undergraduate Internships ($25.65/hour-$30.70/hour) / Masters Internships and PhD Internships Pre-Candidacy ($31.75/hour-$34.06/hour) / PhD Internships Post Candidacy ($33.75/hour-$36.06/hour)
