KUNC Newsroom Managing Producer

Summary:

This position manages a new daily podcast and a local show called "In the NoCo,” and oversees other editorial efforts in the newsroom. The Newsroom Managing Producer works with the host and production team to develop, launch, and manage relevant and engaging content for KUNC’s podcast and daily show.

Essential Functions:

  • Conceptualizes, creates, and assigns segments for the program with an emphasis on new audiences, diverse guests, sharable content, and community engagement.
  • Researches subjects, book guests, develops questions, and writes scripts, working to include diverse voices and perspectives.
  • Provides editing and technical production support.
  • Supports the “In the NoCo” social media presence and community engagement.
  • Manages and edits KUNC’s essayists who each file once a month.
  • Contributes to and helps the Digital Desk with the production of the “In the NoCo” newsletter.
  • Keeps communication lines open with other editors about upcoming segments and stories, as well as the team’s production and editing needs.
  • Participates in station on-air fundraising.
  • Mentors and fosters the professional development of the In the NoCo team and newsroom staff.
  • Participates in station events, occasionally serving as producer of newsroom events.
  • Serves as a backup to both the newscast editor and the digital managing editor.
  • Contributes to the newsroom’s source tracking efforts.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge

  • A strong news sense.
  • An understanding of the public radio news system and its standards.
  • A background in reporting techniques and tactics.
  • A solid foundation in radio production and journalism.

Skills

  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Suite, such as Excel, Outlook, Word, etc.
  • Producing radio segments.
  • Excellent communication skills. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing utilizing proper grammar.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Perform work professionally, with ethics and integrity, and maintain confidentiality when required.
  • Commitment to the professional standards of journalism.

  • Work collaboratively, demonstrating an understanding and respect for public broadcasting in general and the diverse constituencies it serves.

Experience and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism or related field preferred.
  • At least five (5) years of experience in journalism with specific experience reporting and/or producing radio segments is preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus but not required.
  • Required to be located within the Northern Colorado listening area.

Physical Demands:

The employee is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers, reach and lift with arms, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is required to frequently lift up to 30 pounds without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision; distance vision; peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

The employee typically works indoors in a standard office environment but is required to travel to other locations for station events and donor meetings.
