Job Summary:
This position involves conducting screenings on newborns to detect metabolic/genetic disorders that may impact a child's long-term well-being and survival. The duties include adhering to established laboratory protocols and performing various advanced testing methods encompassing molecular, chemical, and hematological techniques. The responsibilities extend to result assessment, record-keeping and documentation management, result reporting, quality control measures, laboratory inventory management, and equipment maintenance within the Newborn Screening Office. Additionally, this position includes other duties aimed at the laboratory's quality assurance efforts, such as quality assurance assessments, writing corrective action reports, and conducting/writing method validation and verification procedures.
Job Duties:
Perform specialized test procedures for identification of metabolic/genetic disorders on specimens/samples submitted for laboratory analysis. Work will involve infectious, toxic, and/or other hazardous materials.
Perform quality assurance assignments including but not limited to performing preventative maintenance and Quality Controls checks, writing corrective action reports, and compiling monthly Quality Assurance reviews.
Conduct methods development and research of new test procedures.
Performing laboratory inventory and Ordering reagents/supplies as needed.
Other duties as assigned as related to the position.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
- Principles, methods, and techniques of metabolic disorders testing.
- Cause of metabolic diseases and their effects.
- Molecular biology and/or chemistry laboratory technique and specialized instrument.
- Techniques in Enzyme Immunoassay, HPLC, lsoelectric Focusing, PCR, and Mass Spectrometry analysis.
- Medical, microbiological, and chemical terminology.
- Policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Safe handling of clinical specimens.
- Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.

Selective Preference(s):
Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited college or university in a laboratory science.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Driver's License.
Candidate must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) minimum requirements for the performance of high complexity testing as defined in the CLIA §493.1489.

Retirement:
To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will contribute to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit. New State employees have a 27-week wait period for contributions to begin.
