Job description

Salt Lake and Utah County

To become an Electrician, you first must find a licensed Electrical Contractor that can sponsor you as an Apprentice Electrician. It is important that the Electrical Contractor is maintaining the proper ratio of Journeymen to apprentices. It is 1 journeyman to 1 apprentice on commercial and industrial projects. On residential projects the ratio is 1 journeyman to 3 apprentices

You start out as a first-year apprentice and are required to work 2,000 hours per year, for 4 years to accumulate 8,000 hours to be able to take the Journeyman test. During your 4 years working as an Apprentice Electrician you will be attending apprenticeship classes. This can be done several ways through different programs. The program you attend will determine the amount of class time and labs you are required to attend. In the apprenticeship classes you will learn about Electrical theory, the National Electric Code and Practical Electrical projects in labs, so you will be prepared in the four-year period to take your journeyman test. You will also learn about electrical safety and general construction site safety.

As a new first apprentice your wage will start at 50% of the journeyman wages being paid at the time you are hired on. While you are attending school for the four years and getting favorable reviews from your foreman, you will receive a one dollar per hour raise every six months.

Being an electrician is exciting. Learning from the ground up, you will be in the know of all the latest electrical technology. The electrical field is a growing living thing with new and exciting break throughs every year. Today’s electricians are more skilled than ever before. The electrician is usually the first and last person on a Job. Starting with temporary power and underground, to putting on the last devices. Turning on the lights and testing fire alarm systems before you leave and move onto the next project.

If you are a person that enjoys working with your hands and learning new things every day, then the electrical field maybe just what you’re looking for!
