Overview

The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner provides care to the patients admitted by the medical staff with the collaboration of the Medical Director of the Newborn Services. S/he performs procedures that are within the advanced scope of Neonatal Nurse practice. S/he seeks assistance and support when necessary, assists in data collection, organizes those aspects of patient care for which s/he is responsible and maintains accountability for own practice and those functions s/he delegates. As a provider, s/he plans, implements and evaluates care that is consistent with the overall admission through the post-discharge plan. S/he practices within accepted ethical and legal parameters of nursing. As an advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, s/he provides care and is a resource for newborns and neonates up to 30 days of age.


Responsibilities

Communication
* Works collaboratively with the neonatologists and other newborn providers.

* Contacts referral facilities to communicate relevant patient information.

* Collaborates with the Perinatal Social work team.

* Works to maintain positive inter-departmental relations.

* Orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic data and communicates results to appropriate providers.

* Uses CPOE and communicates orders to appropriate caregivers. Makes appropriate referrals.


Patient Care
* Identifies perinatal risk factors and provides antenatal consultation and education.

* Attends all high-risk deliveries as appropriate. Provides immediate support/resuscitation for the newborn in the delivery setting.

* Completes a timely and thorough physical assessment at the time of admission, uses data to develop a plan of care. Ongoing assessment as indicated by condition infant.

* Prioritizes and problem solves to meet changes in patient status/condition. Documents interventions and patient response to interventions.

* Develops a management plan for all infants in the SCN/Stabilization Nursery.

* Stabilizes and prepares neonates for transport to a higher level of care as appropriate.

* Applies/Interprets pain assessment tool as appropriate.

* Serves as a patient and staff advocate.

* Consistently supports Patient-Family Centered Care.

* Manages medications, IVs and blood products: includes prescribing and dispensing.

* Coordinates discharge planning.


Education
* Communicates and documents patient/family learning needs.

* Provides education and emotional and social support for families.

* Serves as a resource to staff in caring for neonates and performing procedures. Goes to other departments to educate staff and assist in planning the patient's care such as responding as a resource for neonates in the ED.

* Maintains and enhances knowledge and skills required for unit specialty, management, and leadership.


Compliance/Safety
* Responsible for reporting any safety related incident in a timely fashion through the Midas/RDE tool; attends all safety related training programs; performs work in a safe manner; monitors work environment for possible safety issues and ensures others are also performing work in a safe manner.

* Adheres to regulatory and organizational standards affecting patient care and safety as well as all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Practices in a safe and cost effective manner.

* Stays current and complies with state and federal regulations/statutes and company policies that impact the employees area of responsibility.

* If required for position, ensures all certifications and/or licenses are up-to-date and valid prior to expiration dates.

* Completes all company mandatory modules and required job specific training in the specified time frame.

* Remains current with Neonatal Nurse Practitioner practice guidelines and standards of care. Demonstrates and utilizes the guidelines of care and practice for Neonatal Nurse Practitioners in accordance with Arizona State Board of Nursing Laws and Regulations.

* Complies with ALL WIS infant security policies, practices.


Qualifications

Education
Masters in Nursing- Required

Completion of accredited NNP Program- Required


Certification & Licensures
Current Arizona RN license- Required

AZ NNP licensure/certification- Required

BLS (American Heart Association)- Required

Arizona prescribing and dispensing privileges- Required

DEA registration/licensure- Required

NNP national certification (NCC)- Required

NAH medical staff privilege as advanced practice professional (APP)- Required

NRP- Required

NRP Instructor- Preferred

S.T.A.B.L.E. Instructor- Preferred

Employee will obtain and maintain appropriate clinical competencies for the roles assigned by their departmental leader.

Experience
Recent clinical experience in Level IIE or higher NICU for minimum 5 years- Required

Leadership experience- Preferred

Healthcare is a rapidly changing environment and technology is integrated into almost all aspects of patient care. Computers and other electronic devices are utilized across the organization and throughout each department. Colleagues must have an understanding of computers, and competence in using computers and basic software programs.
