Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking an organized and highly motivated individual for employment as a Natural Resources Intern to support staff in our Southern California Natural Resources Group. This position would support numerous permitting, biological resource, and environmental planning and compliance projects in the southern California region. This position is flexible across our southern California offices, which include locations in San Diego , Orange , Los Angeles , and San Luis Obispo, California .

Primary duties will involve a mix of office-based work (e.g., writing sections for technical reports, permit applications, or other environmental documents; data management; project file organization and management; and project management assistance) and field work (e.g., participating in general biological and natural resource surveys, environmental compliance monitoring, electronic data collection, and water quality sampling).

This position is expected to begin in June 2024.

The responsibilities and duties of this position may include:

  • Working closely with natural resource specialists (e.g., regulatory specialists, ecologists, and biologists), including participating in a combination of office-based assignments and field work.

  • Working effectively independently when required.

  • Follow and perform directions safely and efficiently.

  • Work with a team to solve problems and have the confidence to ask for help.

  • Participate in field work that may involve rugged terrain, sometimes more than 8 hours per day (appropriate safety procedures, including designated breaks, will be implemented).

  • Work at a desk for extended periods of time (sit or stand).

  • Present oneself in a professional manner when interacting with members of the public or clients.

  • Collaboration with supervisor on objectives established at the start of the internship to provide clear direction and goals.

  • Collect, enter, and/or QA data, and apply technical principles and theories, with training and oversight.

  • Interpret and record data using electronic data method, conduct analyses, and compare findings to relevant studies and local, state, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.

  • Assist in preparation of environmental documentations.

  • Occasional travel may be required.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be currently enrolled in a university program pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental science, or other related fields with the intent to continue after the internship, unless graduating.

  • Candidates must have completed one year of study in their program.

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.

  • As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic understanding of GIS.

  • Experience with southern California flora, fauna, and vegetation communities.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Candidate must be flexible and willing to support multiple projects as needed.

Additional Information

  • Relocation assistance and/or per diem is not available for this position.

  • Sponsorship for US employment authorization is not available now or in the future for this position.

  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes in office work in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, or San Luis Obispo, California . The selected candidate must be available to work in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, or San Luis Obispo, California on a scheduled basis.

  • Offered rate of compensation ( California locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The hourly range for this position is $20.00 - $29.54/hr.
