The Musculoskeletal Informatics Group (https://www.musculoskeletal.ai/) in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School has an immediate opening for a motivated Research Assistant (RA) to work with a multidisciplinary team of biomedical engineers, orthopedic surgeons, and computer and data scientists to develop Natural Language Processing (NLP)-based tools for processing medical records. This role contributes to the development of readily available and actionable data to inform and influence clinical care. This opportunity is primarily focused on translational research with immediate impact on clinical care of patients with a range of musculoskeletal conditions, through publication of novel findings and development of computational tools used by clinicians.

The Natural Language Processing Research Assistant:

  • Develops NLP pipelines to extract information (e.g., NER) and conduct classification on clinical notes.

  • Provides data queries and processing on a range of structured and unstructured clinical databases.

  • Builds new databases as needed, and maintains a valid and accurate data repository to ensure availability of required information.

  • Collaborates with clinical, research and administrative staff to ensure that reports are timely, accurate, meaningful, and interpretable.

  • Performs standardized data validation activities to ensure the highest quality information for decision-making.

To qualify, you must have:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Data Science or a related scientific discipline. Master’s degree preferred

  • 2 years of hands-on experience

  • NLP feature engineering and modeling (e.g., text classification, entity recognition, entity extraction).

  • Proficiency in Python.

  • Experience with Large Language Models
