Reports to: Native American Education Coordinator Benefits Eligibility Benefits Eligible Schedule 9-months Monday through Friday Salary Range Group 2 from $16.56 to $20.98 per hour
Position Purpose: This position is Monday-Friday and requires some flexibility to work evening cultural events. Mentors help and support Native American students. Focus areas include student academic achievement, school attendance, school connectedness, physical-social-emotional-mental wellness, school-family partnership, and Native American culture.
 
Responsibilities
1. Mentorship for academic success: with specific training in Multi-tiered System of Supports, eduCLIMBER tracking training, and file review training and with a goal of ensuring Native American youth are engaged in school, mentors work 1:1 with students and collaboratively with Native American Education staff and school staff to support Native American students and their families.
Priority: Essential     Percent of Time: 80%
Examples of this work include:
  • Conducts a full file review to create attendance, behavioral, and course completion goal setting plans that identify missing skills.
  • Designs self-advocacy-based strategies to address missing skillsets, including use of school-based interventions such as study-support classes and online tutorials.
  • Maintains student data tracking for each student on the caseload which includes attendance, course completion / academics, behavioral / social-emotional learning, graduation pathway and Choice Ready data.
  • Monitors student's plans (sets goals, assess progress, analyzes data) weekly to provide feedback, collaborating with students to document progress toward attendance goals, academic goals, and behavioral goals.
  • Participates in Restorative Conferences as needed to support positive interactions between the student and the school.
  • Facilitates and promotes communication between home and school by communicating regularly with students and families to provide feedback to celebrate progress and identify barriers to progress.
  • Collaborates with school administration, counselors, teachers, school staff, and Native American Education Program staff to support and monitor student progress.

                  
2.  Other Duties: Carries out other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or Native American Educator Coordinator.
      Priority: Secondary   Percent of Time: 10%
     Examples of this work include:
  • Assists in planning and execution of Native American activities in the secondary schools as needed. 
  • Assists in the planning and execution of cultural events, as needed. 
  • Collaborates with building administrators and / or staff to ensure Native American students are engaged in school and progressing in academic achievement.
  • Participates in staff meetings and trainings as required by the Native American Education Coordinator or building administration.

 
3. Professional Development: acquires and expands position related theories and knowledge                 
    Priority: Primary   Percent of Time: 10%
    Examples of this work include:  
  • Participates in professional development in multi-tiered system of support.
  • Attends professional development workshops appropriate to the position, including all mandatory district training, as assigned, as well as Multi-tiered System of Supports, eduCLIMBER tracking training, Restorative Practices training and file review training.
  • Recommends adoption of supports missing in the district's Multi-tiered System of Supports
  • Participates monthly in the Native American Education Professional Learning Community to assess the impact of tiered interventions to progress monitor and plan forward.
     

 Minimum Qualifications        
  • Associate's degree in a human services related field or equivalent work experience (example: high school diploma or GED with 30+ months of directly related experience and targeted professional development)
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, motivate, and inspire individuals and groups.
  • Strong communication and relationship management skill
  • Knowledge of Native American culture, history, values, and communities 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in associated field or associate's degree with 18 months of targeted professional experience or professional development
  • Previous experience working with K-12 students or in a youth setting.
  • Working knowledge of Multi-Tiered System of Supports
