About the Department:
Mason's Nanofabrication Facility (NFF) is situated in the Office of Research and Innovation Initiatives, which is responsible for fostering a dynamic, supportive and growing research ecosystem. The NFF serves as a core laboratory to conduct innovative research and development on the micro- and nano- scale. It is also a resource for providing hands-on workforce training to ensure we have a diverse, skilled workforce equipped to meet industry demand. The NFF is available to Mason faculty, staff, and students as well as external partners from academia, government, and industry.
The Nanofabrication Facility is located on George Mason University's SciTech Campus in Manassas, Virginia. The lab is situated in a multidisciplinary research building home to engineers and scientists dedicated to developing new technologies and training the next generation of innovators. The NFF is comprised of a class 1000 clean room and characterization labs. Tools for photolithography, etching, and deposition processes essential for building microfluidics, micro- and nano- electronics, and other devices are available in the clean room. Instruments in the characterization laboratory can be used to conduct materials and device analysis.
About the Position:
Reporting to the Nanofabrication Facility (NFF) Manager, the NFF Process Engineer will assist with the operation of Mason's nanofabrication facility (NFF). The incumbent will support Mason faculty, staff, and students, as well as external stakeholders who use the facility to conduct research and development activities, and they will provide support for classes and workshops that use the NFF. On-the-job training will be provided for the NFF process engineer to acquire more advanced skills and knowledge across tools and processes in the NFF.
Responsibilities:
  • Operate Nanofabrication Facility (NFF) tools, maintain records of process data, troubleshoot equipment, and provide basic maintenance of the NFF tools;
  • Support NFF users by training them to attain proficiency and work safely in the NFF facilities;
  • Assist NFF manager with oversight of the NFF, ensuring user compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements;
  • Work alongside the NFF manager and researchers to design and implement new projects using NFF tools;
  • Assist the NFF Manager with creation of operation procedures and training materials for NFF tools and processes;
  • Supports classes, workshops, and training programs that use the NFF; and
  • Assist the NFF manager with facility administration including tracking and coordinating preventative and regular maintenance of tools, maintaining supply of shared consumables, and coordinating and tracking NFF training among internal and external users.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience with fabrication, assembly, or testing of equipment;
  • Knowledge of engineering and design principles/methods;
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Willing and able to work in a cleanroom environment;
  • Ability to safely work with compressed gasses, acids, solvents, vacuum pump oils, and other chemicals;
  • Ability to work collaboratively;
  • Ability to solve complex problems, multi-task, and work with minimal supervision; and
  • Ability and interest to acquire more advanced skills and knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field; and
  • Two or more years demonstrated experience with process equipment (ex. sputter, evaporation, Reactive Ion Etch (RIE), photolithography) or analytical equipment (ex. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), x-Ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy).
