Central State Hospital is a 277 bed, Joint Commission accredited public psychiatric facility. The hospital serves individuals who are civilly committed and in need of treatment, and/or individuals involved in the criminal justice system who need treatment and/or pre-trial evaluation. We are seeking a Music Therapist to work with maximum security patients and to be part of a dynamic treatment team and Rehab Department. This position will be responsible for developing, planning, organizing, and implementing music therapy treatment groups, as well as occasional scheduled evening/weekend treatment programming and holiday leisure activities with adults who have serious mental illness. This position will work in settings with adults who have serious mental illnesses. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to: representing the Rehab Department as a member of a Treatment Team, completing treatment plans, and conducting assessments. The Music Therapist will also be responsible for medical records documentation and data.
The incumbent in this position is a Music Therapist whose responsibilities include, but are not limited to, client functional evaluations using modality specific assessments and observations, and quality music therapy services via groups and 1:1 intervention to adults with serious mental illness, 18 to 65 years of age who have serious mental illness, addiction issues, physical and intellectual deficits and who have experienced trauma. Planning, facilitating and co-facilitating of therapeutic interventions that are functionally based, promote hope and recovery, and that assist our client’s return to his/her highest level of functioning. Documentation of client’s attendance and progress according to hospital and departmental policy. Will serve as an active member of the Interdisciplinary treatment team and provide information regarding client’s response to treatment and revise approaches accordingly based on current functional level. Will provide cross coverage as needed to all service areas.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to develop, plan, organize and music therapy 1:1 interventions and groups for the purpose of enhancing psychological, physical, cognitive, and social performance using principles of recovery and trauma informed care. Proficient in verbal and written communication skills with ability to use Microsoft Office and other identified computer software successfully. Proficient in verbal and written communication skills. Awareness of safety/security procedures. Ability to manage aggressive/assaultive clients utilizing approved Therapeutic Options techniques and assist in verbal de-escalation of individuals as needed. Knowledge of the purpose for active treatment. Ability to drive/operate and escort clients by state cars, wheelchair equipped bus and 15 passenger van. Ability to complete Rehabilitation Assessments, recommend treatment goals and objectives and rehabilitative interventions, and report progress accordingly. Ability to plan and provide leisure/recreational programming on weekends, holidays, and evenings and be able to work irregular hours as assigned. Additional duties will include (but are not limited to) participating in special unit activities (unit/department/hospital) and working irregular work week and hours when necessary.

Additional Considerations

Music Therapy Degree (grad/undergrad) from an accredited school REQUIRED. Work/internship experience working with adults with mental illness, intellectual deficits and physical disabilities PREFERRED. Experienced in evaluating, establishing treatment intervention, and assessing effectiveness of treatment interventions PREFERRED. Board certified or eligible to sit for certification REQUIRED. *Valid Virginia driver’s license.
