ABOUT NEW CITY KIDS

New City Kids is a high energy, creative ministry for and with youth in Jersey City and Paterson, NJ and Grand Rapids and Detroit, MI. We are unique in trusting teens with leadership. It is a joyful place filled with laughter and hard work, and has an excellent staff of dedicated adults who love children. We employ local high school students as interns to lead an excellent and unique music- focused after school center and summer camp for children ages 6-13, which provides a platform for a whole host of development opportunities for children. As kids and teens engage New City Kids, we come alongside them and invite them to know the power of the gospel and to become disciples of Jesus Christ.
POSITION SUMMARY
Come join a diverse team committed to empowering youth to transform their cities through an innovative approach that links leadership, faith formation, learning, and the arts: employing local youth to lead after-school programming for school-age children in their own neighborhoods. The Music Coordinator will lead the implementation to the Music School embedded in the New City Kids After School Center and provide musical training and support for all teens serving as music teachers. The Music Coordinator will also work to create and develop the musical components of regular center programming, worship team, and major events/fundraisers and will support and provide mentoring and coaching to members of the teen staff and worship team.
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
After School Center
  • Support Program Music Needs - Work with Site Team to lead large group worship and music time 1-3 days per week during After School Center. Prepare kids and teens to be involved during programming including weekly Worship Time. Create opportunities for children to practice outside the classroom.
  • Classroom Management - Ensure that all music classrooms are running smoothly. Support teen teachers in keeping the classroom organized, on task, and musically productive. Follow New City Kids discipline policy when dealing with disruptive behavior by children or teens.
  • Site Performances - Collaborate with other Music Staff to coordinate, prepare for, and execute semesterly performances. Coordinate music class performances and provide musical leadership to teen teachers in order to showcase the musical talents and excellence of students.
Teen Life Internship Program
  • Facilitate group instrument lessons -teach teen music teachers how to play their instrument, teach a class, and update & form curriculum using segments for upcoming week in music class. Train teen music teachers during and/or around Music Bootcamp & Reboot.
  • Observe and guide teen music teachers - Alternate between teaching a music class and being a live coach to teen music teachers. Provide feedback on a teen's teaching ability/performance. Provide guidance and help prepare teen music teachers for end of semester performances.
  • Ensure music class progress - Meet with the Music Director and TLI Department regularly to discuss teen classroom management and behavior, and progress on curriculum.
  • Teen Mentoring - Develop relationships with teens to foster a loving environment in which they feel cared about and valued. Schedule one on one appointments to meet with assigned teens monthly. Intentionally develop relationships with them in order to provide relational, emotional and spiritual support.
  • Support TLI Programming Provide support to teen programming by setting positive culture, ensuring quality control, and meeting designated goals.

Music Department Administration
  • Administration - Track site music goals including but not limited to, classroom learning goals, lesson plans, x-tests, and participation in music programming and report progress regularly to informed staff. Communicate verbally or via email with other staff to provide insight of classroom behavior and progress with lesson plans. Keep record of music equipment inventory across all music sites.
  • Event coordination Support Music Director in coordinating music program events i.e. semester performances, worship team events, and larger fundraising events preparing the worship team and/or kids for their two largest fundraisers of the year. Assist in shaping musical content for both shows and coaching teen musicians until they are performance ready.
  • Worship Team coordination Support rehearsals, help lead, and accompany teen worship team (approximately 30 rehearsals) and possibly perform at churches across the state (6-8 times a year) in area churches. Assist Worship Team Director to coordinate songs, retreats, meals, practices, and prepare band for community fundraising events.
  • Exemplify and support the overall Music School - Abide by and embody all of the training, protocol and vision set forth in the Music School Manual, including BRING MAGIC (for real), Curriculum Writing, GCAMP, SHARP, the 3 Operational Priorities, and the 5 Core Values.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Christian Commitment mature person of Christian faith as defined by the Apostles Creed with an active prayer life and church involvement, and aligned with New City Kids statement of faith: www.newcitykids.org/statement-of-faith
  • Proficientmusician - Expert in one or two of the following instruments: bass, drums, keys, vocals. Multi-musicians preferred.
  • Teaching & Classroom management experience - Is a natural teacher and able to distill complex learning tasks into age-appropriate steps. Has taught in a classroom setting and guided classes to accomplish learning goals over time.
  • Dedicated Team Member flexible and willing to complete tasks that fall outside ones job description; able to make things happen without being micromanaged.
  • Relational & Emotional maturity self-aware, teachable, sensitive to cross-cultural issues, and able to maturely deal with youth from broken contexts. Enjoys listening, spending time with teens, able to gain the trust of teens, and is a professional and mature role model for teens.
  • Affinity for gospel and/or pop - Enjoys playing, teaching contemporary / traditional gospel music; pop music a plus.
  • Affinity for Children and Teens enjoys being with kids aged 6-18 and can communicate at an age-appropriate level.
  • Emotional maturity self-aware, teachable, sensitive to cross-cultural issues, & able to maturely deal with youth from broken contexts
  • Education - Bachelors degree required, in music preferred
  • Drivers license required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Constantly moves about the center during programming hours
  • Regularly moves music equipment, supplies, and furniture weighing up to 50 pounds

DETAILS
Supervisor: Music Director
Schedule: 40 hrs/week, plus evening lessons, and some weekends
