Position Overview:
Multilingual writing consultants are peer educators who meet one-on-one with students in person and online to discuss writing projects in a variety of disciplines and genres. They are open to working with KU undergraduate and/or graduate students in English and at least one other language. This work may include speaking to students in their language of choice about writing in English or that language or supporting students taking language courses at KU. Multilingual consultants collaborate with students at any point in the writing and language-learning process; teach strategies for researching, drafting, organizing, revising, and editing; and direct writers to resources. They also support other KUWC programming, like workshops or writing groups. Consultants are required to work in-person on the Lawrence campus.
Job Description
- Facilitate and foster student learning by asking questions, collaborating with students during consultations, and teaching important writing and speaking strategies and concepts
- Work with multilingual students who prefer to speak in their home language and may be working on writing in English or another language
- Support students taking KU language courses, which may include tutoring in grammar and vocabulary as well as writing skills in the language
- Contribute to the creation of a safe, inclusive, and collaborative environment for learning
- Lead writing workshops and assist with marketing events
- Participate in pre-service training and ongoing education, trainings, and professional development
- Participate in committees and special projects, bringing your ideas, interests, and skills to expand the collective knowledge and abilities of the Writing Center
- Ability to work at least 8 hours/week and at least one evening/week
- Continuing consultants may be interested in additional roles, such as consultant development facilitator, writing group facilitator, or graduate assistant
- Undergraduate or graduate student at KU, enrolled in at least six credit hours
- Fluency in at least one language other than English as demonstrated through interview and writing sample
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English and at least one other language as evidenced in application materials
- A commitment to the improvement of one's own writing and professional development as a consultant, as demonstrated in application materials
- Willingness to work in multiple modalities (face-to-face, online, videoconference)
- A Federal Work-Study (FWS) award for the academic year
- Previous experience as a writing consultant or peer tutor at a high school or college
- Experience with public speaking
- An investment in helping writers reach their academic goals with strong listening skills, sensitivity, generosity, and flexibility
- Experience working productively with multilingual populations
