Hybrid - This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to either Concord, NC or Milford, MI three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

We are seeking an Aerodynamics Thermal Engineer to develop aerothermal solutions across many areas of motorsports, including, NASCAR, Sportscar, IndyCar, and Formula One. As part of our multi-disciplinary team, you'll be at the forefront of designing, modeling, and testing to overcome a range of challenging obstacles and maximize performance on race vehicles.  Your role is key in developing advanced aero thermal toolchains, contributing significantly to our cutting-edge development methodology.

What You’ll Do

  • Assist in the development of 1D thermal simulation solutions, with an emphasis on flexible fidelities and parametric modeling techniques

  • Support Power Unit (PU) cooling architecture for F1 and other performance vehicles

  • Conduct 3D CFD simulation for brake cooling solutions

  • Study tradeoff targets including aerodynamics, thermal, vehicle dynamics, tires, powertrain, batteries, climate etc.

  • Perform physical experiments of Power Unit cooling systems at component, system, and vehicle level

  • Perform physical experiments of brake cooling systems

  • Support full car and subsystem models for use in XiL simulations

  • Identify performance enhancement opportunities with established motorsport programs in the aero thermal subject area

  • Communicate cross-functionally to refine vehicle design or setup parameters

  • Work with GM production and motorsports engineers to define aero thermal integration requirements for optimization of complete race and high-performance production variants

  • Enable world-class engineering tools/methods technology transfer between motorsport and production vehicle development

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics

  • 3+ years of related post-graduate experience specializing in aero/thermal development

  • Experience with 1D/3D thermal simulation at either component, system, or vehicle level, and using physical test results to calibrate simulation model

  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with a talent for organization, collaboration, and communication

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Familiarity with GT-SUITE Flow and Thermal module including physics theory, solver numerical methods and process automation

  • Familiarity with STAR CCM+ including CHT, rotating component methods and process automation

  • Exposure to AMCA chamber, calorimeter and CWT testing, measurement techniques and data systems

  • Experience with the architecture and thermal control development of BEV and hybrid systems
