Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.

The Role

We are seeking a Motorsports Aerodynamics Innovation Lead Engineer to join a multi-disciplined team of engineers and technicians for testing, developing, and optimizing the performance of complete race vehicles. A core function of this role is working with GM Key Partner teams to ensure they are racing the highest performing vehicles possible while building and cultivating close relationships with GM Motorsports colleagues, GM production engineers, and GM supported race teams. You will work with the motorsports organization and lead a team of engineers in developing tools, applications, and test equipment used in both physical and virtual test environments.
Joining the GM Motorsports Organization will provide you with the experience and exposure it takes to work in a competitive environment and the opportunity to showcase your aerodynamic research and development skills, contribute to innovation, connect lessons learned in racing to production intent vehicles, work cross functionally with our partners and ultimately, help shape the future of Motorsports. This position is open to international hires.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead a team of engineers to innovate processes, procedures, and subsystem development to optimize and strengthen inhouse aerodynamic research capability

  • Conduct correlational studies using track, wind tunnel, CFD, and driver in the loop simulation data

  • Organize test results into concise, presentable reports for proper decision making and implementation

  • Work closely with other aerodynamics engineers, design engineers, and race team staff to improve the performance of the complete racecar and implement aerodynamic refinements

  • Provide input and direction on software platform development

  • Work together with GM motorsports engineering and GM Production engineers to support high performance production car needs and promote internal technical knowledge transfer

  • Participate in planning and execution of track, DiL, wind tunnel, flow bench, and calorimeter testing

  • Communicate and cooperate cross functionally to refine test procedures and methodology development

  • Interface with partnering wind tunnel test facilities as required to develop and implement new testing methods and to support data reduction requirements

  • Remain appraised of the latest technologies and best practices of aerodynamic physical and virtual testing

  • Responsible for the collection and numerical modeling of aerodynamic force and moment data for use in full vehicle simulation and driver in the loop simulators

  • Implement best practices for testing, data collection, and data reduction across all supported race series

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Master’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related subject with coursework in Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Fluid Mechanics

  • 15+ years post-graduate aero thermal experience in motorsports environments

  • Experience with computer tools, 3D CAD files, CAE methods and Experimental Data

  • Ability to multi-task in a dynamic, constantly evolving environment, with a talent for organization, collaboration, and communication

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • PhD in mechanical, thermodynamics, or aerospace/aeronautical engineering

  • Knowledge of experimental aerodynamics best practices when conducting physical testing

  • Familiarity with aerodynamic wind tunnel testing, measurement techniques and data systems

  • Experience with the architecture and performance of NASCAR, IndyCar, SportsCar, and F1 race vehicles

  • Knowledge of motorsports race series regulations
