Summary
About the Position: This is a Motor Vehicle Operator (Materials Handler/Forklift Operator) position located at Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

Duties
  • Operate trucks to haul equipment, supplies, and other Motor Vehicles to support U.S. Army Alaska (USAG-AK)
  • Direct and assist in the loading and unloading of vehicles, securing loads, and ensuring vehicles are not loaded beyond their rated capacities.
  • Perform driver's maintenance, e.g. checks and services vehicles with gas, oil, air, etc., in accordance with established rules and regulations.
  • Perform a wide variety of warehousing tasks including receiving, stocking, and issuing bulk supplies, and turn in of excess equipment.
  • Operate forklifts capable of lifting up to 15,000 pounds to move, load, unload, transfer, transport, stack, or un-stack palletized goods, boxes, crates, merchandise, materials, and supplies from one location to another.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 70 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Motor Vehicle Operator (Materials Handler/Forklift Operator) ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Motor Vehicle Operator (Forklift Operator/Materials Handler) tasks which includes performing one or more of the following: 1) transporting supplies and equipment for long or short hauls 2) ensuring cargo is properly loaded and arranged for delivery 3) receiving or storing or shipping a variety of supplies or materials or equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Incumbent exerts moderate to heavy physical effort in climbing on Motor Vehicles to hook up chains, tow bars and hooks to load and secure cargo. Also, exerts moderate physical effort to operate, turn, back up, and control vehicles. Considerable physical effort may be required to make emergency repairs when the vehicle is on an open highway. Warehousing work involves standing, stooping, bending, and frequent lifting and carrying of supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to approximately 70 pounds, and occasionally in excess of 70 pounds. May be required to work at a rapid pace for long periods of time. Operating the Motor Vehicle and fork lift involves moderate physical effort in manipulating hand and foot controls while driving, turning, starting and stopping. The fork lift involves; raising, lowering, and tilting the loads being moved. Subject to strain because of vibration of the fork lift.
  • Operates Motor Vehicles of up to 26,000 pounds in all types of weather with temperature extremes ranging from +90's to -50's degree Fahrenheit. Road conditions, on post and off post, may be icy, with packed or loose snow; wet; or dry. Physical condition of the roads, any time of the year, may be very poor due to severe frost heaves. Incumbent may be subject to whiteout conditions, ice fog, and other conditions restricting visibility while driving. May be required to drive in city rush hour traffic, any time of the year, exposing the incumbent to the possibility of serious accidents and/or injuries due to collisions and shifting cargo. Because the incumbent needs to climb over the truck, in all types of weather, she/he is subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises, frostbite, and other serious injuries due to falls from the truck or contact with cold metal. Due to weather conditions and remoteness of some routes the Motor Vehicle Operator may be subject to prolonged periods in arctic conditions. Also may be exposed to dirt, fumes and other hazardous materials.Warehousing work is done inside and outside. May work inside in areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, poorly lighted or designated as a high security area. May work in bad weather in such outside areas as open docks and storage yards. Frequently exposed to extreme temperatures. The work may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes and bruises; and falls from ladders; or injury from mechanical conveyor systems or other materials-handling equipment.
