Overview

Moody’s Risk Management Solutions (RMS) is the world’s leading provider of solutions for understanding the risks of natural catastrophes. Our Model Development group builds the models and data at the heart of these solutions, quantifying the potential impacts from earthquakes, tropical cyclones, floods, and other natural and man-made perils.  Our clients include several hundred insurance and reinsurance companies as well as brokers, banks, asset managers, hedge funds, regional and local governments, and multilateral agencies around the world.  

 

The Position

We are currently seeking a Summer Intern to join one of the following teams within the Model Development Group:

  • Earthquake Hazard
  • Vulnerability
  • Financial Modeling
  • Model Certification
  • Exposure

The Model Development group focuses on developing industry leading stochastic catastrophe models for the quantification and management of catastrophe risk.  

The candidate will be working in a multidisciplinary environment with catastrophe risk modelers in other teams and across different time zones (California, London, and India).  He or she will be engaged in the full scope of data development, from primary research to implementation to market release and post-adoption client support.  The candidate will be expected to gain and further utilize an in-depth knowledge of the RMS products and relevant technologies.

 

Requirements style="font-family:"arial",sans-serif">

  • Pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. in a field related to science or engineering, including but not limited to: Civil/Structural Engineering, Urban Planning, Geographic Information Systems, Financial Engineering, Statistics, or Computer Science;
  • Coursework or independent experience within creating quantitative models using large data sets (SQL, R, Python, Matlab, or similar)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – evidenced by presentations at meetings and conferences – with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated interest in catastrophe modeling through coursework or research in engineering, earth science, urban planning, or economics

 

Preferred Skills Based on Team Placement:

Exposure Team:

  • Experience working with analytical models with data from public/official sources (e.g. Census, tax/property data) and/or open-source data (e.g. OpenStreetMap);
  • Familiarity with tabular and spatial data sets commonly used for modeling exposure and risk: population (GPW, GHSL); socioeconomic (World Bank, UNDP); and physical/environmental (MODIS, Nighttime Lights, satellite imagery);
  • Knowledge of building construction practices across countries, with an interest in the social and cultural contexts that guide growth and development;

 

Financial Modeling Team:

  • Strong programming skills with experience using C#, Python, and/or Java
  • Relevant coursework and knowledge of probability and statistics
  • Majors in STEM recommended – Civil Engineering/Geo background not required or necessary

Model Certification Team:

  • Candidate pursuing Master’s or PhD degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related fields
  • Proficient in high level computer programming and scripting languages: R, Python, C++/C#
  • Experience in developing or debugging complex computer programs/systems for scientific or engineering applications.
  • Proficiency in Linux environment and shell scripting a plus
  • Detail oriented
  • Ability to work independently

Vulnerability Team:

 

  • MS in civil/electrical/mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics (engineering background preferred)
  • Familiarity with probability and statistics
  • Programming experience using language such as Python, SQL, R, Java, C++ or C#
  • Experience writing scientific code in R, Python a plus
  • Working knowledge of handling large batch data and relational databases
  • Candidates must be able to work well on a team, contributing ideas and taking constructive critical feedback
  • Interest or experience in working on areas including Bushfire and Earthquake a plus

 

Earthquake Hazard Team:

  • MS degree in geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, geosciences (engineering background preferred) or equivalent. PhD or PostDoc preferred.
  • 2+ years of programming experience
  • Experience in writing scientific code in Matlab, R, Python or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of handling large data and relational databases
  • Familiarity or experience in geotechnical engineering, engineering seismology, earthquake engineering, probability and statistics
  • Experience in Java/C#/C++
  • Experience or familiarity in PSHA, regressions, ground motions, site characterization, site response or similar topics
  • Demonstrable knowledge of complex data structures and algorithms
  • Experience in data science, ML, deep learning and/or AI

 

For US-based roles only: the anticipated hiring hourly wage for this position is $35/hr  , depending on factors such as experience, education, level, skills, and location.
