Moab is a world-class outdoors destination renowned for its red rocks, dinosaur footprints and proximity to National Parks. It’s also a city that needs great local journalism.

The Moab Times-Independent is hiring a reporter to cover Moab government, development and zoning, water issues, local business, education, mining and, yes, recreation.

This position will work with an editor to publish the T-I online and in print. Both the print and digital versions are freely circulated to the entire community, which supports the T-I philanthropically.

The Moab Times-Independent is a nonprofit that is stewarded by the nonprofit Salt Lake Tribune, and you will work with The Tribune team in addition to your editor in Moab.

Excellent writing and research skills are a must. Successful candidates will have a basic understanding of news standards and ethics, and experience in publishing daily journalism. You should be able to meet deadlines, report thoroughly, write clearly and grasp the key elements of a story. You must understand balance in journalism and impartiality in reporting.

Responsibilities include:

• Distinctive reporting on tight deadlines with clarity, accuracy and compelling storytelling.
• Maintaining a schedule that allows for both quick-turn stories and the ability to work on longer-term projects.
• Development of a broad range of sources on beats or across topics.
• Understanding audience data – which of your stories resonate with readers and which are not? Working with analytics leaders to determine best practices moving forward.

• A demonstrated commitment to fairness and accuracy.
• Experience in filing and tracking open records requests and the ability to interpret complex documents. The ability to enter and analyze multiple data points using Excel/Google Sheets and other analytical tools.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and the ability to take and give constructive criticism.
• Expert-level research skills in using digital research tools to find information.
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in developing and executing long- and short-term projects.
• Command of grammar, spelling and AP style, as well as clear skills in story organization and concise, vibrant writing.
