Job description

Salary: $16.35/hour
Duration of Assignment: 12 months from start date or 1,000 hours (whichever comes first)
Program: Water Resources Center
Job Location: This position is with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Missouri Geological Survey (MGS), Water Resources Center, and will be located at 111 Fairgrounds Road in Rolla, Missouri.
Why you'll love this position:
You will be assisting MGS' Water Resources Center (WRC) with reviewing historic water quality data and assimilating this data into a geodatabase. This data includes information on inorganic compounds (IOCs), metals, and radionuclides. The created geodatabase will be utilized to develop an understanding of groundwater chemistry and the availability of the groundwater to be utilized as a source of drinking water. You will also assist professional staff in reviewing water well drill cuttings to determine geologic formations wells penetrate, identify geologic problems that could lead to poor water quality produced from the well, and prepare the cuttings for permanent storage in the MGS warehouse.
What you'll do:
  • Review historic water quality data to be assimilated into a geodatabase
  • Utilize ESRI-GIS software to identify areas where groundwater may be of marginal quality
  • Prepare water well drill cuttings for identification and permanent storage
  • Assist other WRC staff as needed
Professional Experience to be Gained:
  • Develop knowledge of the stratigraphy and aquifers of Missouri
  • Develop an understanding of Missouri's groundwater quality and where it may not be suitable for use
  • Experience reviewing and serving historic data stored at the Missouri Geological Survey
  • Use of computer software to develop water quality maps
  • Opportunities for collaboration and mentorship with professional geologists
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Enrollment in a geology or geological engineering program
  • Introductory coursework in geology
  • Experience with spreadsheet and graph development in Excel and use of ESRI-GIS software
