Pay Range
$110,700 - $170,556
$110,700 - $142,128 Annually for the SES.1 level
$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for the SES.2 level
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Mission Planning & Analysis Engineer to support the Flight Test Group. The Flight Test Group is a fast-paced, cross-disciplinary team. Team members are expected to be adaptable and to develop skills in areas outside of their core competencies; you will be well-rounded and possess a desire to expand your skillset. Your primary role will be to develop and utilize analysis Mission Planning workflows to create optimized instrumentation plans for full scale flight tests. The work scope will involve the consideration of camera optics, autonomous vehicles, deployment logistics, and scoring and uncertainty analysis. This position is in the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED). DTED provides support to Strategic Deterrence (SD) Programs.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
Serve as a user-developer for Mission Planning and Analysis tools.
Collaboratively develop workflows in a multidisciplinary team to help automate tasks such as optimizing asset placement, transforming between different frames of reference, and developing instrumentation plans.
Adapt software development and quality assurance practices and contribute to their continuous improvement.
Work with other team members to implement, test, and use new methodologies, diagnostics, or algorithms to support Mission Planning activities, and to identify and proactively adapt to future software needs.
Leverage existing code and tools using defined practices and procedures to calculate and generate scoring results for terminal flight missions.
Author and/or contribute to technical presentations to sponsors.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level
Innovate, develop, utilize, and refine novel and cutting-edge algorithms to support Mission Planning needs.
Utilize a variety of approaches, methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity. Identify and evaluate capability gaps to be used for prioritizing analysis and software improvements and make recommendations for improvements to processes as appropriate.
Help generate slide decks that contain analysis products of flight data results from the field and further document the results in Word documents to distribute to sponsors and Programmatic customers. Work independently to write code and/or scripts to process test data and or plan missions.
Represent the Flight Test Group and provide input on technical issues for specific projects.
Provide guidance and/or informal mentoring to less-experienced team members, and review code written by other team members and provide feedback to ensure best practices are being followed and applied as appropriate.
Qualifications
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Proficiency in Python, git, data structures, and software development.
Ability to read/write and interpret MATLAB code.
Adaptable, detail oriented, and comfortable working on a cross-disciplinary team; willingness to learn and perform new duties in a fast-paced environment.
Sufficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Ability to travel a couple of times a year in support of missions, to remote areas such as uninhabited islands, deserts, or on board a ship at sea.
Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level
Experience writing code and/or scripts to process test data and/or missions. Experience with JAVA code.
Experience using Matlab and/or Python to generate engineering metrics.
Ability to work independently on complex problems with minimal direction.
High initiative and an ability to identify team needs and translate them into work scope.
Proficient verbal and written communication skills to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
Qualifications We Desire
Master’s degree in Data Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Experience with uncertainty quantification methods (sampling, global sensitivity, reliability, or Bayesian calibration).
Familiarity with image processing techniques and extracting engineering parameters from optical images. Knowledge of computer vision principles.
Experience in developing Graphical Users Interfaces to make use of analysis tools easy for casual users of the code. Experience with analysis of physical systems and mechanical design.
Prior experience in a hands-on or in-the-field environment.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
