Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student's evolving needs, interests, and abilities, and fosters diversity as an integral part of school life. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community.
We are seeking a full-time Middle and High School (grades 5-12) French teacher starting September 2024. French at Dalton is taught through the three modes of communication (interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational), with attention to the cultural products, practices, and perspectives of the French-speaking world. We are committed to ongoing curricular and pedagogical anti-racist work, and we seek a candidate who shares that commitment and who can contribute to our efforts. We seek out opportunities for professional growth and encourage reflection on our own practices. Our ideal candidate has MS/HS teaching experience and can easily teach French at all levels, from novice to advanced. We are looking for someone with native-like proficiency who enjoys teaching Middle School students as young as 5th grade and also working with High School students. Language teaching/methodology training and understanding of ACTFL standards and proficiency guidelines is a plus. We would be particularly eager to hear about any interest, background, or expertise in the teaching of West African or other non-European literatures in French. Interest in leading language and language trips would be welcome.
Responsibilities:
- Teach French courses (multiple grade levels).
- Design engaging curricula and lesson plans, collaborate with others in the department.
- Engage actively in departmental and school-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism efforts.
- Work one-on-one with students daily for support and enrichment.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree preferred.
- Minimum of three years relevant teaching experience; middle and high school teaching strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to equitable and inclusive practices, with respect to pedagogy, curriculum, literary interests, and/or community engagement.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Facility with relevant educational technologies.
The Dalton School actively seeks to forward the equity and diversity of our community in our admissions, programs, and hiring.
