PURPOSE: The Vice Principal of Azalea Middle School is the deputy administrative leader of the school, and as such supports the Principal in the leadership of the school. The Vice Principal will use the necessary leadership, supervisory and administrative skills so as to promote the emotional and intellectual development of each student to his/her fullest potential.
REPORTS TO: Principal of Azalea Middle School
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Essential Job Functions listed below are the Essential Functions for the Principal of Azalea Middle School. The Essential Job Functions of the Vice Principal of Azalea Middle School are identical, with the understanding that the primary function of the Vice Principal is to support the Principal. It is expected that the Principal and Assistant Principal annually meet to determine a division of duties that best supports the needs of the school and the achievements of the students. As the Principal oversees assumes full responsibility for the school, some of the essential job functions below will not necessarily be functions attended to by the Vice Principal.
  1. Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District's Mission.
  2. Implements and enforces Board policies and administrative rules and regulations relating to the schools.
  3. Establishes a high degree of transparency between all educational stakeholders to provide a systematic avenue for the discussion of school programs, practices, and policies.
  4. Keeps students, teachers, and parents informed of the factors which affect decisions; thereby gaining increased understanding and support in all areas of the school program.
  5. Establishes and maintains a systematic plan for keeping students' records.
  6. Devises plans and executes training programs which assure safe conduct of students and staff for fire, earthquake, and/or other emergencies which may arise.
  7. Takes all reasonable precautions to safeguard the health, safety, and general welfare of his/her staff and students in the school.
  8. Take emergency measures in the event of injury and report such injuries to all appropriate parties.
  9. Takes appropriate actions as required to increase student safety and to protect citizens and their property.
  10. Prepares and submits the school's budgetary requests and monitors expenditures of funds.
  11. Provides for the establishment of guidelines for proper student conduct and discipline.
  12. Works with various members of the central administrative staff on school issues that support schools, students, staff, and activities such as transportation, special services, support services, and other District staff.
  13. Participates in appropriate District meetings as may be requested.
  14. Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field.
  15. Assures that in his/her absence another District administrator is designated to be in charge of the school.
  16. Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.
  17. Develops and implements an annual school improvement plan that supports the values and strategic plan of the District.
  18. Is responsible for the detailed organization of the school and for the assignment of duties to the members of his/her licensed and non-licensed staff.
  19. Leads the staff in developing and adapting courses of study and school programs to achieve the goals of the District, school, and District and State curriculum requirements.
  20. Encourages teacher participation in discussions and deliberations regarding instruction, staff development, budget, and other programs
  21. Supports constructive and professionally sound instructional research by teachers in the use of new methods, materials, and content
  22. Recruits, screens, trains, assigns, and evaluates all school personnel under his/her supervision. This shall include recommendation as to initial employment as well as continued employment, non-renewal, or dismissal.
  23. Provides for the orientation of newly assigned staff members and assists in their development, as appropriate.
  24. Carries out the district vision for a systematic program of supervision and evaluation of the entire staff.
  25. Develops and implements professional development systems to support the development of school employees including, but not limited to, collaborative learning groups such as PLC's. Establishes and maintains favorable relationships and partnerships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs, to interpret Board policies and administrative directives, and to discuss and resolve individual student problems.
  26. Helps to establish and maintain viable and effective parent organizations
  27. Establishes an effective system for handling all complaints and concerns received in his/her school, including the investigating of facts, and constructive responses to legitimate grievances; keep written copies of communication from and with patrons, apprising Superintendent of problems or concerns.
  28. Coordinates Site Committee activities and decision-making.

  30. Cultivates and models a professional working and learning environment.
  31. Maintains effective working relationships with school personnel, students, and parents. Effectively works and communicates with students, parents, and staff from diverse cultures or backgrounds including those who speak limited or no English.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Master's Degree in Education.
  2. An Oregon Administrator license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Azalea Middle School Vice Principal works primarily within the school building. Although the primary work is indoors, the Vice Principal frequently works outdoors supervising students, in variable weather conditions including inclement weather. The incumbent must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. The incumbent will need to walk quickly at times, as well as speak and hear in often loud environments.
The position involves a high level of interaction with students and families from multiple and diverse backgrounds many who have particular or unique needs. The mental demands on the Middle School Vice Principal are considerable. The incumbent must maintain control under stress, and must manage him/herself in the presence of emotionally challenging interactions with staff, students, and parents.
Attendance at meetings or activities outside of the normal workday will also be required, including frequent, prolonged, and irregular hours including evening and weekend time.
