Description
Our Physical Education program is designed to advance students physically, mentally and emotionally through various games, activities and discussions. Students will be given an opportunity to experience a variety of physical activities, varying from individual to team, and from traditional ball sports to nontraditional sports. Teachers are responsible for teaching everything from gymnastics to pickleball to aquatics. Physical Education Teachers are responsible for providing a safe and inclusive environment for students to learn, adapt, grow and challenge themselves physically. They are responsible for creating activities and games that suit the needs of the class and the unit and are appropriate for the spaces that are available to teach in. This position requires the ability to adapt and change quickly based on weather, space availability and other teachers and classes.
The primary purpose of this position is to teach full-time from August 2023 through January 2024:
- Teach three Middle School and one Upper School Physical Education classes.
- Teach an Elective class that can be based on faculty & student interest.
- Supervision during lunch and other free times.
- Attend department meetings.
- Assume other general duties as a Middle School faculty member.
Essential job responsibilities include:
- Creating a safe and cooperative environment where students learn new skills and teamwork is emphasized.
- Plans and prepares lessons and gathers equipment before the start of class.
- Supervises students on the school bus and off campus where they will often teach class.
- Coordinate with other teachers ahead of time regarding the spaces that are available to them that day and be willing to work together with age appropriate learning.
- Improves skill and knowledge base in current trends, research and methodology in instructional techniques, technology, multicultural content, problem solving and interdisciplinary connections;
- Establishes learning objectives consistent with appraisal of student needs, curricular framework, and knowledge of human growth and development;
- Prepares, administers and corrects evaluations and assessments, and records results;
- Selects and uses appropriate instructional strategies including, but not limited to, lectures, group discussions, demonstrations, modeling and multimedia teaching aids to present subject matter to students;
- Evaluates student progress using appropriate assessment techniques;
- Maintains order and discipline in the classroom conducive to effective learning and takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities;
- Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives;
- Counsels pupils when academic and adjustment problems arise;
- Confers with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students; arranges and participates in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary;
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, Board Policy and Administrative Regulation;
- Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment
- Attends and actively participates in staff/faculty meetings and provides input regarding the planning of instruction goals, objectives and methods;
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for paraprofessional educators, student teachers, and volunteers; and
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Experience, Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilit
- B.A. required, master's preferred.
- Minimum 5+ years teaching experience and demonstrated growth and advancement in responsibilities.
- CPR, First Aid and Lifeguard CPR certification
- Professional experience in progressive models of education and curricula.
- Strong cultural competency skills and track record of successfully working with families from diverse backgrounds.
- Exemplary skills in team building and complex project management
- Proficiency in word processing, MS Office, Google Docs and Blackbaud learning management system.
- A friendly, gracious, professional manner and outlook.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Impeccable ethics and a demonstrated commitment to confidentiality.
- Fluency in Spanish or a language other than English is preferred.
