POSITION TITLE: Middle School Literacy Intervention Specialist
DEPARTMENT: TEACHER
REPORTS TO: OTL SUPERVISOR AND BUILDING PRINCIPAL
SUMMARY: Assesses students' skills and provides instructional support for students in need of literacy support. Responsible for assisting in the planning, development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of regular education services to students in collaboration with administration and school staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
  1. Participate in team/department decisions about students needing literacy support, including the development, review and modification of individual intervention and support plans.
  2. Schedule, provide, and track specialized individual and small-group intervention for students in need of literacy support.
  3. Assist classroom teachers with classroom instruction by modeling lessons, coaching, consulting, collaborating, and assisting with the implementation of the instructional program, including classroom management techniques for maximizing their students' opportunities to learn.
  4. Coach, collaborate, and plan with course specific teams for the purpose of improving literacy instruction at the classroom level.
  5. Provide leadership in the coordination and administration of ELA assessments and instructional programs.
  6. Analyze, interpret, and monitor assessment results and statistical data related to student literacy performance to support staff in making effective instructional decisions around tier one instruction and intervention.
  7. Present professional development to school staff on best teaching practices pertaining to literacy.
  8. Attend and participate in SRBI and Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings, as needed.
  9. Communicate and confer with parents concerning individual students in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
  10. Serve on school and district committees.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises classroom and students (volunteers and parent helpers where appropriate).
Performs general supervisory duties as scheduled.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Master's Degree.
Reading certification preferred.
Reading concentration at Master's level preferred.
At least three years of teaching experience, grades K-8 preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate.
102 Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts, 1-12 preferred
215 English, Middle School, 4-8 will be considered
305 Elementary, 1-6 will be considered
015 English, 7-12 will be considered
LITERACY SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret complex literary and nonfiction texts, periodicals, professional journals. Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence. Ability to express ideas clearly and fluently using a range of sentence types and a strong command of the conventions of the English language. Ability to apply concepts of 6-8 ELA curriculum, including a range of literary works from a variety of contexts. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications, including google suite apps. Ability to use computers for email, word processing, accounting, databases and presentations. Strong skills with Google Sheets/Excel is necessary. Familiarity with Lexia Powerup preferred.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to instructional programs. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.

The employee is directly responsible for safety, well-being or work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
