Working under the Section Supervisor, the incumbent serves as a Microbiologist responsible for performing the technical and operational aspects of the Microbiology Testing Unit of National Science Laboratories (NSL)-Gastonia.Qualifications: Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.
BASIC REQUIREMENT:
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
FOR THE GS-11 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-9 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
- Performing full range of microbiological analyses and tests on food samples in the laboratory.
- Expertise with operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting instrumentation utilized for microbiological testing.
- Independently planning and carrying out work and resolving technical problems.
- Corresponding with customers including handling inquiries and reporting of sample results.
- Recognizing and mitigating issues and conditions that may have adverse effects on performance of team, instrumentation, and analysis methods.
- Implementing new testing and analytical methods involving either automated analytical systems or manual laboratory analytical procedures.
- Developing and suggesting improvements to processes that benefits the lab and customer.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
