About the Role: We are looking for a self-driven, experienced Metallurgical Engineer to join our Metals Platform team within our Medical Products Division. In this role, you will contribute as a NiTiNOL subject matter expert responsible for providing new product and technology development teams with metallurgical expertise in materials and process selection with the goal of accelerating the development time required to bring a design or technology from concept to product feasibility.

This position will be located at our facility in Flagstaff, Arizona, with the possibility of a hybrid remote work arrangement, depending upon the responsibilities of the role and business needs.*

Responsibilities:
  • Be passionate about providing Metallurgical Engineering expertise for development of complex implantable medical devices and technology
  • Provide expertise in the processing and evaluation of medical device materials such as NiTiNOL, stainless steel, and cobalt-chrome alloys
  • Identify and drive technology development projects to enable next generation medical devices
  • Build and maintain strong interpersonal and cross-functional relationships
  • Support time sensitive manufacturing needs with adequate technical rigor
  • Solve technical challenges and perform research to understand interactions between materials and medical device performance
  • Work closely with the design teams, prototyping and new product development teams, other multi-disciplined engineers, product specialists, intellectual property champions, supply chain, manufacturing associates, and regulatory agencies in the development of new products for medical applications
  • Engage actively with external partners (suppliers, test facilities, standards committees, technical conferences, academia)

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced Degree in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering or related discipline plus a minimum of 5 year experience in the medical device industry experience OR a Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering or related discipline plus a minimum of 7 years experience in the medical device industry experience
  • Hands on experience with tensile and fatigue testing of NiTiNOL
  • Subject Matter Expert in NiTiNOL properties, processing and microstructure relationships
  • Familiarity with medical device prototyping and manufacturing, quality control systems, design control, validations, and regulatory requirements
  • Understanding of metallurgical principals and ability to apply these principles to device design
  • Demonstrated creative problem-solving capability
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively in team situations, as well as independently
  • Ability to travel up to 10%

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with electropolishing, surface engineering, and corrosion
  • Knowledge of statistical data analysis techniques and the design of experiments
