Job description

The Department of Mental Health's Cape Cod and Islands Community Mental Health Center is seeking a talented individual to fill a full-time position to provide direct care services to clients in our Inpatient Unit. An MHW III, under the guidance and supervision of Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses, provides direct care services daily to clients. This includes instructing and assisting patients in learning skills of daily living, problem solving and development and utilization of adaptive coping skills. Other duties include housekeeping tasks, transportation of clients to appointments in a state-issued vehicle, organizing, scheduling and encouraging patients to participate in group and leisure time activities, and assisting with unit admissions and discharges as assigned. Also, proper, timely and accurate documentation of observations and care delivered, both electronically and on traditional paper is required. In addition, the MHW III is expected to adopt a leadership role and establish self as a positive role model by participating in the training and daily supervision and instruction of MHW I and MHW II staff to ensure completion of daily duties and general shift functions.

Please Note:  This is a full time (40hr/week), day (1st) shift position. Shift Hours are 7am to 3:30pm. Days off are Wednesday and Thursday.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):

  • Provides programmatic direct care services daily while instructing and/or assisting patients in learning the skills of daily living to promote independent ADL functioning.

  • Assist in the implementation of habilitative/rehabilitative behavioral and recreational programs by discussing observations regarding patient behavior, needs, desires or problems, providing information and making recommendations concerning the patient and their treatment plan.

  • Responsible for completion of housekeeping tasks and/or the supervision of patient general related housekeeping duties in patient areas as needed or as assigned by supervisor to maintain a clean sanitary environment.

  • Maintain patient records (traditional paper and electronic media) which may include daily reports, round sheet etc. according to unit protocol.

  • Attend patient related review meetings as a member of an interdisciplinary team as assigned by the Team nurse to promote continuity of care.

  • Accompany patients to various appointments with accompanying paperwork or certain program or treatment areas and assist professional or medical staff in providing services to patients.

  • Responsible for organizing, scheduling, and encouraging patients to participate in leisure time activities during unstructured time to enhance client socialization skills.

  • Ensures that a safe environment and therapeutic environment is maintained at all times and reports to supervisor when the system is defective.

  • Participates in orientation of new MHW's by providing information and assistance to them in order to introduce them to daily duties and general shift functions.

  • Responsible for daily supervision and instruction of MHW I and MHW II staff regarding unit protocol and daily unit activity and work assignments by establishing self as a role model for other MHW's utilizing effective communications skills and is professional in manner to create a more therapeutic milieu.

  • Responds to emergency situations and is knowledgeable training and updated according to hospital protocol about first aid and CPR.

  • Participates in continuing education designed to teach and upgrade skills to work effectively with clients as assigned.

  • Ability to respond to each patient's crisis intervention/de-escalation plan and uses plan to maintain behavioral control of all patients on the unit and participates in patient restraint for patient safety purposes according to agency protocol as needed.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the English language.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively in oral expression.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression.

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely, expressing thought clearly and developing ideas in logical sequence.

  • Ability to work in a team setting and in group situations.

  • Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons from varied ethnic, cultural or economic backgrounds.

  • Ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful or emergency situations.

  • Ability to exercise sounds judgement.

  • Ability to lit and carry heavy objects or persons.

  • Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regulations, procedures, guidelines and policies governing assigned unit activities.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Psychiatric and acute care settings experience preferred.

  • Given the population served, bilingual or multilingual fluency.

The CC&I CMHC provides comprehensive services to adults and children.  Programs include a 16-bed acute in-patient unit, Case Management, Day Treatment Program, and Adult Community Clinical Services (ACCS).  The CC&I CMHC is a Joint Commission certified facility. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in providing direct care service to the mentally ill, emotionally or physically handicapped, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. Substitutions:   I. A Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in psychology, human services, Mental Health or retardation may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*   *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.   SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: None.
