Northern Middlesex YMCA Job Opening

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Child Watch Instructors are child care workers who work on-site at the YMCA in our child watch program. Child watch is a drop-in child care program for children 8 weeks to 5 years old whose parents are working out at the Y.

SKILLS, POSITION REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • A minimum of 3 to 6 months of experience working with children.
  • Regular attendance at staff development workshops and staff meetings.
  • Must successfully complete mandatory online training to pass probationary period.
  • Provide a safe, nurturing, and respectful environment for children in the program.
  • Ensure that children are properly supervised at all times.
  • Enforce rules and appropriate consequences.
  • Remain engaged with children, maintaining an enthusiastic and committed attitude. Provide age appropriate materials for children keeping children involved in positive, productive activity.
  • Follow all YMCA policy and procedure regarding discipline, supervision, communication, and appropriate interaction.
  • Maintain a professional appearance. Wear YMCA labeled clothing as to be easily identified by parents as the worker on duty. Dress in clothing that is comfortable and appropriate for active participation in all program activities.
  • Provide communication with parents and provide documentation when necessary.
  • Provide parents with ongoing information regarding their children’s experience in the program.
  • Learn the names of all children and parents.
  • Assist parents during sign in and out.
  • Check sign in sheets to ensure that parents are completing all requested information throughout the shift.
  • Be able to effectively communicate the Child Watch policies to parents.
  • Provide well written documentation of any injury, accident, or incident as required by policy.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with YMCA colleagues and supervisor.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and open communication.
  • Bring concerns, questions, problems or suggestions to the attention of the child watch coordinator.
  • Ensure that Y property and equipment are well maintained and protected from inappropriate use.
  • Communicate and problem solve with colleagues using positive and effective strategies, providing an example for the children in the program.
  • Assure that as a member of the team you have completed all tasks as assigned.
  • Speak positively about the YMCA Programs, co-workers, and supervisors.
  • Be punctual to assigned shifts.
  • Follow all Child Watch health, safety, and sanitation requirements which include: Provide feedings for infants and toddlers as needed. Provide diaper changes to children under the age of three. Perform daily cleaning duties as assigned to scheduled shift after all children have left the room. No use of cell phones during shifts.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
