Assists management in providing work leadership and guidance to ensure smooth and continuous flow of work and high quality performance. Supervises and coordinates the activities of all lab sections on evening and/or night shift in support of the hospital’s mission of patient care. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology (Medical Laboratory Science) or related science such as Microbiology, Biology, or Chemistry. 2. Licensed as a Laboratory Technologist in the state of West Virginia within 30 days of employment. EXPERIENCE: 1. Four (4) years of experience as a Medical Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE: 1. Certification as a Medical Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA). EXPERIENCE: 1. Five (5) years of experience as a Medical Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist). 2. Supervisor experience. CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned. 1. Assist the Managers in the supervision of all lab areas to assure appropriate personnel coverage. Assist with ensuring adequate staffing and appropriate staff in support of the hospital’s mission of patient care. 2. Participates in the timely orientation of new staff, utilizing WVUH and lab orientation checklists and department policy, and documents in the employee personnel file. Provides input for staff’s annual performance appraisals, disciplinary actions and terminations, based on documented performance within time frames established by the institution. 3. Schedules technical personnel for particular assigned shift, adjusts staffing patterns to ensure adequate staff coverage for all areas as required by work flow and work volume to assure completeness of workload. 4. Coordinates and ensures all Reference Laboratory specimens are sent to appropriate reference laboratory and results are received within specified time frame. 5. In conjunction with LIS personnel and technical staff coordinates all computer downtime activities in accordance with standard operating procedures. 6. Coordinates and oversees the technical activities of Specimen Processing and/or Phlebotomy to assure appropriate specimen collection and processing in support of hospital’s mission of patient care. 7. Operates and supervises the operation of laboratory equipment consistent with standard operating procedure and promptly prepares patient specimens in accordance with standard operating policies. 8. Solicits and provides input for the development and/or revision of standard operating procedures and department policies. 9. Maintains working knowledge of current hospital and lab administrative and safety policies/ procedures as well as the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), applies these policies consistently and seeks management guidance when needed. 10. Responds, researches, and answers to customer inquiries and performs as variety of duties related to customer service in accordance with hospital and laboratory policies and procedures. Monitors customer service activities and day-to-day Specimen Processing and/or Phlebotomy activities to identify potential problems and provide possible solutions. 11. In collaboration with the Technical Specialist, supervises staff in the performance of any required maintenance, calibrations and quality control of equipment as directed by the laboratory standard operating policies and procedures within the predetermined time schedule, recognizing problems and responding in an appropriate manner. 12. Recognizes errors, problems and utilizes expertise to perform minor and major troubleshooting and appropriate problem resolution, in a timely manner. 13. Requests input and direction, as needed, from the Medical Director(s), Administrative Director, and/or Manager(s) regarding medical and technical issues, employee training, quality assurance and quality control procedures. 14. Organizes time, materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and adjusting workload and staffing to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency. 15. Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in-services, etc.) to disseminate information to laboratory staff, allied health personnel, Medical Director(s), physicians and nurses by written and/or verbal means. 16. Maintains laboratory communication and ensures that information concerning new policies and procedures is available to staff in a timely manner and is incorporated into routine policies and procedures. 17. Displays initiative and responsibility for personnel and staff growth by attending workshops, reading professional articles, attending seminars, giving in-services, etc., as needed, and by demonstrating a commitment to maintaining expertise. 18. Assist the Technical Specialists in the planning, development, evaluation, and implementation of new test procedures. 19. Reviews and evaluates, as needed, quality control records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts and trends and correlates data to assure quality patient test results. 20. Assists in organizing time, materials and resources in an economical manner, and prioritizing laboratory requests by assessing and arranging workload throughout all laboratory sections within the division to provide for optimal patient care and efficiency. 21. Assures daily completeness of all workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization of work according to test ordering status (e.g., routine, STAT, ASAP, emergency), and by reviewing pending test results (e.g., daily monitoring, turnaround studies). 22. Initiates effective communication with supervisory personnel and all other laboratory personnel, other hospital departments and patient/public, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital’s mission of patient care. 23. Under the guidance of the Medical Director, communicates laboratory test results effectively and in a timely manner, to the health care team. 24. Participates in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).
