Medical Interpreter - Prn Le Bonheur Children's Job

Provides on-site and telephone interpretation services in a Foreign Language and English for patients, patient families, physicians, and care givers.  Provides interpreting services and document translation services as needed for Limited English Proficient / Non English Proficient (LEP/NEP) patients and their families, works to support Patient Family Centered Care, and ensures focus on customer service. Works with all age-specific populations including neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics patients.  Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

REQUIRED:

• High school diploma or equivalent. 
• Evidence of language proficiency in English and the foreign language.
• Evidence of training as a Medical Interpreter as demonstrated by successful completion of MLH Candidate Assessment (Oral and Written).   Basic training courses usually consist of 40 hours or more of course work (including classroom and practice).

At least one-year work experience.

At least one-year work experience in hospital or healthcare setting.

National Certification as a Medical Interpreter or Healthcare Interpreter is preferred.

• Evidence of fluency in English and the foreign language.
• Demonstrated ability to serve as a Medical Interpreter with ability to speak, read, and write in English and the foreign language and interpret/translate from the foreign language to English and vice-versa.
• Ability to use Microsoft applications (such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
• Ability to work without close supervision and to exercise independent judgment.
• Ability to maintain working relationships with physicians, directors, co-workers, and other Associates.
• Ability to set priorities, organize and coordinate multiple tasks, and maintain control of workflow.
• Ability to work effectively in situations of high stress and conflict.

• Performs a variety of interpreting and translation services to assist foreign language-speaking patients receiving care at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare.  
• Provides information on hospital and community resources.  Assists departments in the interface with LEP/NEP patients.

• The physical activities of this position may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion.
• Must have good balance and coordination.
• The physical requirements of this position are: light work - exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently.
• The Associate is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity, such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; or extensive reading.
