Responsibilities
Accurately transmits messages between non-English speaking patients and healthcare providers or allied health staff at Mayo Clinic utilizing consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation modes with a. focus on moderate to lesser acute appointments; may help with higher acuity appointments depending on business need. Supports and helps Clinical teams in their duties and responsibilities to increase successful outcomes and patient satisfaction with the hospital. Adheres to the National Standards of Practice for Interpreters in Health Care and to the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care. Receives training and guidance from Medical interpreter III and quality assurance team as well as monitors self-performance with regards to interpreting skills. Helps provide information on role and limitations of role to both patients and providers to contribute to a successful encounter. This includes education and mediation on culturally specific values, beliefs and practices. Presents to various allied health and practice committees on behalf of Language Services. Provides mentoring, helps training and provides coaching to Medical Interpreter I as assigned by Supervisor. May be asked to help with translations on an ad hoc manner and may also be asked to help with on-call interpreting needs based on business need. Documents encounters within the Language Services dispatching system. Utilize on-line computer systems such as Outlook Express, some knowledge of Microsoft Suite is preferred, and usage of Epic as required.
Qualifications
Fluency in English and foreign language(s), both oral and written at a Superior or Advanced High level according to ACTFL - http://www.actfl.org/files/public/Guidelinesspeak.pdf
High level of customer service and a positive approach
High School degree required or 5 years of experience as a Medical Interpreter, with a very strong medical vocabulary or
Associates degree and 3 years of experience as a Medical Interpreter, with a very strong medical vocabulary (including vocabulary of medical specialties, to interpret for our medical specialties clinics)
Proof of Medical Interpreter training - minimum of 40 hours
Familiar with diversity of cultural/socio-economic backgrounds
Good interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills
Knowledge of computer systems
Good analytical and time management skills
Both written and oral certification (for languages that provide oral certification) from National Board of Certified Medical Interpreters or Commission of Certified Healthcare Interpreters required. Associates or Bachelor degree preferred, Both written and oral certification (for languages that provide oral exams) from National Board of Certified Medical Interpreters or Commission of Certified Healthcare Interpreters preferred, and/or other certification related to the interpreting profession that is accepted and recognized by Mayo Clinic
Completion of a one-year interpreting program
Participates in, and contributes to, the successful operation of the interpreters office resulting in the highest level of satisfaction of internal and external clients of the office. Performs duties in a spirit of teamwork and cooperation. Adheres to hospital policies on customer relations and hospitality. Understands the hospital’s system of service delivery.

Emotionally challenging, as some interactions may be highly stressful requiring maturity, composure & sound judgment.
