Job description

The Department of Laboratories at Seattle Children’s Hospital is seeking a new M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. trained Director of Anatomic Pathology who is board-certified in pediatric pathology and demonstrates a track record of accomplishments to join and lead our cohesive group of anatomic pathologists to care for children in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Our Department has a decades long tradition of providing patient-focused services and engaging in collaborative research and training of house staff and medical students. Candidates must have an M.D. or equivalent degree and qualify for licensure in Washington and for faculty appointment at the University of Washington. You will join a full-service combined anatomic/clinical pathology team comprised of 10 Anatomic Pathology and 16 clinical pathology faculty working with over 200 technical staff to collectively perform over three million clinical tests annually, including in specialty areas such as molecular microbiology, next-gen sequencing, flow cytometry, and biochemical genetics. The Anatomic Pathology service accessions ~10,000 specimens annually including 7,000 surgical specimens, 2,000 cytology specimens, 700 bone marrow samples, 750 placental/perinatal specimens, and 120 autopsies including referred fetal/perinatal cases. The Director of Anatomic Pathology will collaborate with and report to the Chief of the Department of Laboratories at Seattle Children’s to guide and grow the service and to adapt to the changing field of Anatomic Pathology including in areas such as digital/computational pathology and further integration of molecular diagnostics.

Seattle Children’s is expanding to meet the needs of the growing Pacific Northwest. We serve the greater Seattle region and cover a referral base that includes Washington, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. There is a growing fetal medicine program including treatment of twin-twin transfusion syndrome, with fetal surgical procedures performed in partnership with the University of Washington. Seattle Children’s is licensed for 407 beds and provides service for numerous subspecialty programs, including busy oncology, gastroenterology, and transplant services. Our faculty are jointly appointed in the University of Washington Dept. of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, which creates even more world-class opportunities for research and teaching.

Our strong healthcare sector, leading academic institutions, diverse neighborhoods, and mild climate create an unparalleled living experience. Join us and thrive personally and professionally in the beautiful and verdant Pacific Northwest.

For more than a decade, Seattle Children’s has been nationally ranked in all 10 specialty areas evaluated by U.S. News & World Report. We are honored to be the top-ranked pediatric hospital in Washington and the Pacific Northwest.

Our organizational DNA takes form in our core values: Compassion, Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Equity and Innovation. The future starts here.
