Essential Job Functions
SEMSA's Medical Director is an independent contractor position responsible for:
  • Guiding the professional medical operation of emergency medical system as requested.
  • Make or direct the making of such reports and records as may be required by SEMSA and/or regulatory bodies, whether public or private as requested.
  • Foster the maintenance of consistent high-quality services and advise/assist in frequent consultation with the Continuous Quality Improvement Manager in the development of a comprehensive quality improvement program. This will include investigations, employee remediation, performance improvement plans and the status of clinical privileges.
  • Assist with the development of company rules, if requested.
  • Assist in the design and development of patient information forms, medical record forms and consent forms for use in the field or for company purposes.
  • Strive to ensure that appropriate medical record entries are made concerning all examinations, procedures and other services performed by personnel.
  • Undertake activities, as reasonably requested, involving professional contacts with physicians, hospitals, public health agencies, and state and local medical societies to apprise such individuals and groups of the nature and availability of facilities and services of SEMSA. Facilitate the exchange of information on patient care, administration, medical policy, and utilization review. Meet with city, county, or elected officials and/or organizations on behalf of SEMSA as reasonably requested.
  • Develop lines of communication with departments to ensure professional interactions related to medical care.
  • When requested, cooperate with, and assist other members of SEMSA in the preparation of clinical and other reports for publication.
  • Use best effort to elevate the standing of SEMSA in the fields of emergency medicine and pre-hospital or out-of-hospital care.
  • Give technical advice and assistance as may be requested to facilitate the installation of equipment, expansion of services as well as general strategic planning.
  • Authorize, supervise, and approve the purchase of necessary medications for pre-hospital use in accordance with the full scope of authorized practice throughout Merced and Lassen County here SEMSA provides ambulance service. Narcotics and controlled medications are specifically included in this agreement and the Medical Director will be responsible for approving all local implementation plans for the distribution and handling of controlled substances.
  • Advise and assist in other special medical/administrative projects as requested. Such projects might include but are not limited to investigating trends and developments in emergency medicine practices and techniques, innovative approaches that improve quality of care and immediate and long-range planning for emergency medical services.
  • Fulfill all Medical Director functions associated with the operation of the SEMSA communications center and Critical Care Transport operations as they exist.

Have knowledge of and abide by all information system security rules as they apply to operations within SEMSA. The Medical Director will support and participate in all security systems as they relate to information security. It is the responsibility of every computer user with SEMSA to:
  • Know and follow Information Systems security policies and procedures
  • Attending Information Systems security training, when offered.
  • Report on Information Systems security problems.

Requirements
  • California licensed Physician
  • Be Board certified in area of specialty.
  • Able to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Able to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and SEMSA leadership.
  • Needs to work with Risk Management on controlled medications,clinical support for clinicians,
  • Work with HR on removal of clinical providleges.
  • Help guide operational issues when needed.
  • Help with CAAS surveys ad preparation with clinical staff.
  • Help update CQI plans on an as needed basis.
  • Review the standard monthly, quarterly and yearly reports.
  • Work with the clnical staff for the monthly reports.
  • Meet on a regulary basis with key clinical personnel.

Other Skills/Abilities
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • ACLS/PALS and BLS/AED Instructor Certificates preferred.
