Objectives/Purpose of Job

 

Responsible for new innovative research in the field of contact lens designs and methods development.  Lead the early-stage ideation and development of these designs for optical ophthalmic devices (e.g. contact lenses) utilizing optical and mechanical modeling / design systems.  Act as Technical Lead of contact lens research and development projects through product development and commercialization process.  Provide technical expertise in product design and associated research in advancing design methodologies and capabilities.  Experience in myopia management for children, and/or previous lens design experience preferred.

 

Key Activities/Responsibilities

 

  • Interface with customers and internal functions to define and develop new business opportunities for design concepts to fulfill unmet needs.
  • Develop contact lens designs using mechanical / optical modeling and data analysis.
  • Prepare design documentation including drawings, models, specifications, and release documents.
  • Complete regular literature searches and share associated information with team.
  • Define and coordinate product testing (clinical and bench) requests.
  • Participate on product development teams acting as Technical Lead and/or product advocate throughout the research and development process.
  • Perform data analysis during product/process research and development.
  • Prepare reports summarizing product design, testing and/or development data.
  • Develop and implement design methods for conceptualizing and optimizing contact lens designs.
  • Develop and implement procedures of design methods.
  • Provide mentoring to less experienced Engineers.

 

Qualifications/Training

 

  • PhD or MS Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or related curriculum.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing mechanical and/or optical models & designs with proficiency in CAD or other 3D modelling software.
  • Demonstrated expertise with MS Office product (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and MS Project.
  • Experience with statistical analysis applications (Minitab preferred).
  • Experience with programming using Matlab or similar analytical software.

 

Experience

 

  • 7+ years relevant industrial experience in Medical Device research and/or development (MS), 3-5 years relevant experience for PhD.
  • Subject matter expert in ophthalmic design research and development.
  • Experience/familiarity with myopia management research preferred.
  • Technical lead experience.
  • Mechanical and optical design expertise desired (CATIA/Zemax).
  • Familiar with regulated Medical Device development environment (ISO/FDA).
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to interact and influence all levels of the organization.

 

 

  

 

As required by New York State's pay transparency bill, Bausch + Lomb provides a good faith minimum and maximum salary range of compensation for roles that can or will be performed, in New York State.  Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to skill set, level of experience, and specific office location.  For New York State, the range of starting annual base pay for this role is $95,000 to $125,000.
