Medical Assistant
Medical assistants are allied health professionals who work predominately under licensed provider authority in outpatient settings-including outpatient departments of primarily inpatient institutions. Medical assistants may be delegated certain clinical, patient-communication, and administrative tasks by licensed providers. The category of licensed providers most often includes physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants
Duties and Responsibilties:
- Provide patient-centric service and care to all patients in partneship with Providers.
- Respond to assigned practice and CardioOne email boxes ensuring patients or CardioOne receive a response within 48 hours.
- Work independently and collaboratively with the Practice Manager to serve as a seamless link between patients, practice staff, and providers to ensure optimal experience for all patients and practice providers.
- Assist in addressing patient concerns and requests through patient triage, collecting pertinent information to escalate to the provider team as necessary.
- Prepare charts for all Providers- prepare chart sections in Athena EMR at least 24 hours prior to visit with the following; but not limited to: reason for visit.
- Perform timely patient medication reconciliation
- Collect information pertiment to current pharmacy patient medication information
- Forward last office note/ensure notes are accurate for current visits in the EMR system.
- Review anc collect lab test results
- Review and collect imaging testing results
- Review and collect all other patient pertinent medical information necessary for care
- Patient Intake: Welcome all patients with kindness and compassion. Execute intake checklist [as defined by provider], perform trained documentation workflows in AthenaHealth EMR
- Perform and document in clinic testing and imaging
- Injections (certified and registered MAs only)
- Ask patients if they had any recent blood work done/online or phone confirmation.
- Obtain blood pressure, vitals, and weight.
- Glucose monitoring (if necessary)
- Perform EKGs
- Perform MCTs
- Perform Sleep Studies
- Perform Holter Monitoring
- Submit referrals to other provider offices.
- Acquire testing and imaging orders on the provider's behalf
- Manage all aspects of patient prescription needs, including: placing orders, coordinating care with pharmacies, answering patient questions & managing renewal requests
- Additional care coordination responsibilities as requested and trained by Practice Manager and Providers.
- Other duties as assigned (ex: assisting patients with accessing care once they are on practice premises).
- Screening of patients under 15 minutes
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
Patient Care Quality:
- Assess the quality of patient care provided by Medical Assistants through feedback and reviews.
- Monitor adherence to established medical protocols and procedures.
Patient Wait Time:
- Minimize patient wait times by optimizing the scheduling and workflow processes.
- Track and improve the efficiency of patient room turnover.
Clinical Documentation Accuracy:
- Ensure accurate and complete documentation of patient information in electronic health records.
- Minimize errors in recording vital signs, medical history, and other relevant patient data.
Collaboration with Providers:
- Evaluate the effectiveness of collaboration between Medical Assistants and cardiologists.
- Measure communication and coordination in patient care.
Medical Equipment Maintenance:
- Monitor the maintenance and proper functioning of medical equipment in examination rooms.
- Ensure that Medical Assistants follow protocols for equipment sterilization.
Patient Education Effectiveness:
- Assess the success of Medical Assistants in providing clear and understandable patient education materials.
- Measure patient understanding and compliance with treatment plans.
Team Collaboration:
- Evaluate the level of teamwork and collaboration among Medical Assistants and other healthcare professionals.
- Address any communication or workflow issues that may arise.
Adherence to Infection Control Practices:
- Monitor compliance with infection control protocols to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
- Implement measures to enhance infection prevention.
Continuing Education Participation:
- Track Medical Assistants' participation in relevant continuing education opportunities.
- Ensure staff remains informed about the latest developments in cardiology.
Patient Follow-Up:
- Evaluate the effectiveness of Medical Assistants in following up with patients regarding treatment plans and appointments.
- Measure patient compliance with recommended follow-up care.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 1-year professional experience in healthcare setting.
Strong attention to detail, and the ability to work independently - Excellent communication (verbal and written), clinical and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrates strong work ethic and reliability (i.e. attendance and punctuality)
- Ability to create and sustain meaningful patient experiences.
- The ability to quickly resolve issues and think outside the box
- Knowledge of medical terminology. Must be able to efficiently communicate with patients and providers using appropriate language.
- You are a self-starter, extremely organized and a multi-tasking master..
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certification as a Medical Assistant or Certified Nurse Assistant in good standing
- Knowledge and use of EHRs (Athena experience is a plus!)
- Basic knowledge of chronic diseases and clinical processes (diabetes, hypertension, asthma, etc).
