JOB SUMMARY
The tasks of certified Medical Assistants for the School Based Health Center may include preparing patients for examinations, taking information pertaining to the nature of the visit along with the patient’s medical histories, assisting providers during the examination, explaining medical procedures to patients, call in prescriptions to pharmacies, collect laboratory specimens, sterilize medical instruments, scheduling follow-up appointments and appointments for medical consultations with specialist, draw blood, remove sutures, and take electrocardiograms.
Incumbents in this job may have access to proprietary consumer or company information and must maintain the privacy and confidentiality of this information. All employees must perform their jobs with a focus on risk management, occupational safety and health, and providing internal and external customer service. Employees working in a supervisory capacity must practice effective human resources practices to ensure a healthy working environment.
KEY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbents in the job must be able to perform the key duties and responsibilities of the job and all other duties as assigned with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Ensures the timely recording of all patient information in the Health Electronic Record;
- Elicit and record the patient’s chief complaint;
- Take and record vital signs; temperature, pulse, respiration, B/P, Ht. and Wt. and head circumference as needed;
- Participates in patient education on disease/health specific issues;
- Gather and label lab specimens as ordered, instruct patients in obtaining lab specimens;
- Perform venipuncture;
- Provide patient with information concerning visit;
Assist Provider as needed with examination as a chaperone, interpreter or dressing wounds, etc.;
Clean and straighten up exam rooms between patients and at the end of the day;
Restock examination rooms with necessary supplies and check for expiration dates on testing supplies;
Perform in house testing; urine dip, urine HCG, Strep, Influenza, FSBG and Drug Screen;
- Perform EKG, Peak Flow Test, Audiometry, Vision Screening;
- Perform injections; PPD, Vaccines and Vitamin B12;
- Send Recall and No-Show letters and perform telephone Recalls as instructed;
- Obtain ‘Prior Authorization’ for necessary prescriptions and testing as ordered by Provider;
Obtain referrals for specialist, make appointments and inform patient of the appointment;
- Scan patient laboratory and radiology reports into electronic medical records.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not supervise others
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES
- High School graduate or equivalent;
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program, BLS and Infection Control training;
- Two (2) years of experience working in a full-service ambulatory care health center or hospital outpatient program.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Certified Medical Assistant will be assigned to the School-Based Health Center. Maybe required to travel to other sites based on the needs of the agency.
