This position requires the extern to have a thorough understanding of the clerical and clinical operations of the department/ambulatory clinic. The extern will be responsible for verifying patient information, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit. The extern will prepare the patient for examination by obtaining vital signs and performing preliminary physical tests. Tasks required of the Medical Assistant may include but not be limited to audiometry, visual testing, EKGs, venipuncture, injections, referral management, prior authorization and other duties assigned. The extern is responsible for consistently and accurately documenting patient information.
Education
This individual must be a junior or senior high school student enrolled in a Medical Assistant program or have a high school diploma or equivalent and enrolled in a Medical Assistant program.
Licensure

Certification
Must possess a current CPR certification and current health records with the appropriate immunizations to work in the health care field (hepatitis B and tuberculosis), or be willing to obtain upon employment.
Experience
Must quickly become familiar with front and back office functions such as medical terminology, managed care plans, medical insurance claim filing and charge entry, and various other functions of the clinic.
Completed course curriculum with current program with experience related to front and back office functions, vital signs, venipuncture, injections, point of care testing.
Computer/Typing/Math Skills
Standard office and medical equipment with emphasis on computer hardware and software, electronic health records, and various clinical equipment that may be used to carry out the duties of the position.
Excellent computer skills are necessary to perform various job duties in the clinical area as well as the front office function.
