Job Summary
The Medical Assistant will have a primary focus on care coordination for patients as well as Spanish interpretation services while engaged in basic healthcare activities. The Medical Assistant will serve as a Qualified Staff Interpreter providing Spanish language interpretation, written translation and assistance in education for non-English speaking patients, their families and other internal and external customers. The Medical Assistant will provide assistance and support and will facilitate the efficient delivery of patient care as directed by licensed staff in rendering basic healthcare to the patient, with a primary focus on Spanish speaking and high-risk patients. The Medical Assistant will administer medications as directed by supervising physician and according to State Law. The Medical Assistant will also assist with administrative/clerical functions.

This position is located at the Department of Pediatrics South Main Clinic on 3690 South Main Street, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Essential Functions
1. Interprets communication between the staff or faculty and the Spanish speaking population. Translates written educational materials and documents in accordance with readability guidelines. (25%)
2. Utilizes Spanish language skills on non-English speaking patient population. Follows up to inquire about individuals’ status, answers questions and coordinates care under direction of physicians and nursing staff. (15%)
3. Assists with the preparation and smooth operation of the clinic by making patient charts, referral letters and clinic schedules. Answers patient questions regarding policies, co-payments, fee schedules, etc. Obtains medical and insurance information and enters information into the data base. (10%)
4. Assists Spanish speaking patient population in completing medical, financial and related forms, and in accessing patient medical portal. (10%)
5. Maintains patient registries and utilizes them to manage patient care for specific patient populations. Maintains and updates patient care coordination notes in electronic medical records. (10%)
6. Assists with identification of “high-risk” patients (the chronically ill and those with special health care needs) and adds them to the patient registries for continuous follow up and monitoring. (10%)
7. Utilizes Spanish language skills on non-English speaking patient population to teach patient education and discharge planning in conjunction with physicians and nursing staff. (5%)
8. Coordinates Certificates of Medical Necessity, determines and collects payments due prior to procedure, and communicates ineligibility to physicians and patients when necessary. (5%)
9. Prepares patients for examination and diagnostic procedures according to clinic procedures such as recording temperatures, pulse rate, blood pressure, and responses to standardized medical history questions. (<5%)
10. Assists licensed staff with all patient care related duties as deemed necessary by assigned department. (<5%)
11. Acts as a chaperone for health care providers during patient examination as requested and assists with procedures. (<5%)
12. Confirms correct insurance information and interviews and evaluates patients to determine eligibility for assistance programs. (<5%)
13. Performs Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Waved Lab testing. (<5%)
14. Coordinates referrals and obtain pre-authorization from insurance companies for procedures and treatments. (<5%)
15. Tracks and organizes outside patient medical records to ensure complete medical records of all complex patients. (5%)
16. Escorts non-English speaking population to appropriate service area. (<5%)
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
  • This position involves intermediate working conditions in a healthcare setting that may exert up to 50 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving patients or objects, such as medical equipment, while providing patient care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients. Incumbents face exposure to potentially dangerous contaminated bodily fluids, blood, used needles and other contaminants as part of the daily hazards of the job.


Minimum Qualifications
Required
Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred
Completion of an accredited Medical Assisting Program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Preferences
  • Fluency in Spanish, both oral and written.
  • Current certification as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through AAMA, or as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through AMT, or as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) through NCCT, or as a Clinical Medical Assistant Certification through NHA
  • Certificate of Successful Completion of Bridging The Gap Training (Spanish), or Successful Completion of the Professional Medical Interpreter Training (Spanish) through the University of Utah Health Interpreter Services’ Department.
  • Six months of related work experience in a healthcare field
