Purpose: To assist in surgical operations under the supervision of physicians, registered nurses, and/or other surgical personnel. Duties include conducting pre-operative appointments, preparing surgery schedules, and admitting surgical patients.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensures that the operating room is prepared for the surgeons and surgical technicians with all necessary medical/ophthalmic supplies such as lenses, sterile instruments, surgical packs, and other equipment
- Prepares the recovery area for nursing staff ensuring all necessary IV supplies and patient surgical wear are readily available
- Sterilizes medical equipment, instruments, before surgery and during patient turnover
- Conducts a daily check of OR temperature, medication refrigerator temperature, smoke detectors, backup systems, etc. and maintains logs of the results
- Assists in admitting surgery patients by taking and logging vital signs, assisting them with putting on surgical gowns, booties, and caps, and directing any relatives on when the patient will be done with their procedure
- Reviews pre-operative surgery charts to prepare for the pre-operative appointment ensuring all applicable paperwork is included
- Conducts pre-operative surgery appointments by taking and logging vital signs, explaining pre-operative instructions to the patient, and advising the patient on what to expect on surgery day
- Creates the initial surgery schedule by entering patient data into the surgery template including patient name, procedure, medical history, and lens implant and provides the drafted schedule to the Registered Nurse to finalize
- Provides coverage during lunchbreaks for surgical technicians and handles sterilization needs during the patient turnover
- Assists surgery center file clerk with surgery chart preparation
- Follows applicable policies and procedures and takes precautions to establish a safe work environment
- Maintains strict patient protocols in accordance with practice policies/ HIPAA requirements.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience: 2 years of Medical Assistant experience or equivalent training required
- Knowledge of ophthalmology and surgical experience preferred
- Language: English required; Bilingual in Spanish preferred
- License/Certification: Certified Medical Assistant & BLS Certification required
- Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time up to 8 hours with frequent bending, stooping, squatting, sitting, twisting, and reaching. Occasional lifting of up to 25lbs.
