POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)/Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) will be able to perform routine and special diagnostic procedures. The level of analyses performed may range from point of care testing to complex testing, involving all major areas of the clinical laboratory. The MT/MLS/MLT will have diverse functions in areas of pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes. In addition, the MT/MLS/MLT will have responsibilities related to information processing, training and quality control within the laboratory.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education or Formal Training
- Associates degree or higher in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science, or medical technology; or
- Associates degree or higher, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry); or
- Have education equivalent to at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours), including 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of medical laboratory technology courses; or
- Have education equivalent to at least 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours), including 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of science courses that include 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of chemistry, 6 semester hours (9 quarter hours) of biology, and 12 semester hours (18 quarter hours) of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; or
- Completion of a clinical laboratory training program.
Copy of diploma, certificate, or academic transcript required.
Special Qualifications (Licensure, Registration, etc.)
- MT/MLS/MLT certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT); OR
- Sectional certification depending on lab section (e.g. M(ASCP) for Microbiology, H(ASCP) for Hematology, etc.); OR
- Specialty certification depending on lab section (e.g. SC(ASCP) for Specialist in Chemistry, SBB(ASCP) for Specialist in Blood Bank, etc.); OR
- Certification registry eligible and certified within one year of becoming eligible (must present confirmation page of scheduled test date at time of hire).

- Willingness to work any shift and/or weekends.
- Ability to interact with and treat all age groups.
- Familiarity with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and The Joint Commission (TJC) laboratory regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Run appropriate laboratory technical equipment.
- Use laboratory information system.
- Instruct new employees and orient through the department in which they are working.
- Use hospital information system.
- Wash glassware.
- May be designated lab supervisor on weekends or holidays.
- Accurately charges lab procedures.
- Assists with supplies, inventory and storage.
- Adheres to all policies and procedures as established.
- Monitors test results for validity.
