Job Title: Mechanical Engineer [Tier 2] (Rockville, MD)

Temple Allen Industries (www.templeallen.com) is a small technology firm headquartered in Rockville, MD, just outside of Washington D.C., currently developing a line of smart automation products which promise to dramatically reshape the robotics, machine learning, and human augmentation landscape. The firm has enjoyed particular success in serving a prestigious list of aerospace clients in both commercial and defense sectors.

Position: Mechanical Engineer

We are looking for a few exceptional candidates who have graduated from a competitive program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or related disciplines to consider joining the elite team at Temple Allen Industries in Rockville, MD. We want someone who is eager to bring their own skillsets and personal experiences in generating mechanical designs that expand available features and deployments, emphasize ease of assembly, simplicity, and robustness, and improves the overall experience of operating an EMMA system.

You should be excited to spec out the requirements for a design and design to achieve or exceed those specs. You should be interested in completing the full design process from designing new parts and making their drawings and inspection documents, to creating the assembly steps and procedures, and testing and validating your design delivered on its requirements. Your passion for mechanical design will help to fuel your work in improving our EMMA robotic solution. You should want to be a part of the design process and be excited to participate in discussions with other designers and engineers to help understand the system holistically and better implement elements that bring real value to the artisan and the enterprise.

We give everyone who joins our team a lot of trust and responsibility. We operate with the assumption that everyone will do the right thing. As part of our Engineering team, you will bring your talents, energy, and dedication to the cutting edge and interdisciplinary development of industrial automation technologies that integrate unique mechanical / pneumatic tooling with a collaborative automation controls methodology that incorporates Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Requirements:

The following items are required for an individual accepting the responsibilities of this position:

  • BS in mechanical Engineering with a strong academic record
  • 2+ years’ experience as working engineer (we will consider exceptional candidates who are more recent graduates)
  • Takes on a sense of ownership for a given task and fosters a self-responsibility to see an entire task through to completion
  • Gets excited about their work and is proactive in identifying the next steps needed to complete a task
  • CAD modeling experience with Solidworks, or equivalent, that includes the following:

o Making part and assembly models that are used in a prototype or official product system.

o Designing piece parts that are manufactured by another department or another company.

o Generating marketing material or images that are used within presentations.

  • Experience generating drawings for custom parts that were produced by another machinist

o Familiarity with presentation of dimensions and tolerances within a drawing

o Has made revisions of existing drawings as well as drawings for completely new parts.

  • Experience working with a Bill of Material
  • Experience with Finite Elements Analysis (FEA)
  • Experience working with or generating assembly instructions
  • Experience with technical writing

o Has given written technical descriptions of engineering concepts or problems to people of non-engineering disciplines

o Has given written technical descriptions of Mechanical Engineering concepts to non-Mechanical Engineers

  • Experience designing around, generating specifications for, and selecting off the shelf parts for a given design

o At least one project in which you selected the hardware for a major subassembly

o At least one project reliant on major components, such as cylinders, motors, gear trains, that were specced out by you

  • Exposure to or experience with pneumatics is a benefit, but not a requirement

Expectations:

At Temple Allen, we articulate multiple levels of employee competencies and express them as tiers. Early career candidates may only be ready for tier 1 responsibilities, while more experienced candidates will typically be expected to perform tier 2 or even tier 3 tasks, as appropriate. What matters to us most is what we can count on you to do successfully, not how many years of experience you may have, though these are often correlated. We believe it is important to set up every hire for success by carefully matching expectations and competencies. The lists below will help candidates for this role understand what our expectations are:

The following items are expected tasks an individual accepting this position will be undertaking and completing:

Tier 2 Responsibilities Include:

  • Design parts and subassemblies.
  • Design pneumatic circuitry for systems and generate their respective schematics.
  • Redesign existing subassemblies and systems for interfacing with electronics.
  • Redesign existing parts and subassemblies to reduce weight and still maintain required level of structural integrity.
  • Work with other engineering and non-engineering disciplines to generate performance and functional specs for a given design.
  • Generate testing plans and delegate testing work orders to evaluate mechanical subassemblies and/or pneumatic circuitry achieves performance and functional specifications.
  • Generate and delegate assembly and fabrication work orders.
  • Write and update instructions and the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for how subassemblies are assembled.
  • Design prototype systems to evaluate conceptual designs for research and development.
  • Assemble first articles and prototypes on the factory floor
  • Transfer knowledge and information from the factory floor and system installation trips into documentation and future designs
  • Generate and send out drawing packages for outsourced parts.
  • Generate inspection work orders and inspection procedures for incoming parts.
  • Review technical sections from the system manual(s).
  • For a given build, ensure all parts arrive and are properly kitted for assembly.
  • Generate final checklist to evaluate system fulfills performance and functional specifications.
