Job Description
The Mechanical Drafter Intern is part of the Research and Development/Continuation Engineering team at Scanlan International. They will work on project teams to develop new and support current surgical instruments. This will involve creating and revising computer three dimensional models and drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD. They may also perform product evaluations, root cause analysis, research solution, design testing fixtures, verification and validation testing and preparing design control documentation.

Prepare/revise drawings for SII, McLean using AutoCAD LT 2021 and SolidWorks:
- Prepare new and revise existing detailed drawings and solid models of devices, prototypes and fixtures to document specifications for engineering, production and quality control as requested.
- Prepare/Review prototype and test fixture drawings as requested.
- Provide accurate and timely drawings for approval.
- Author Document Change Request (DCR) documents
- Convert AutoCAD 2D drawing into SolidWorks 3D models and create the detailed drawings based on the model

Measuring and Testing:
- Perform testing per written test protocols and record data.
- Take measurements of sample instruments and prototypes.

Filing:
- Maintain electronic copies of drawing per documented work instruction.

Perform other tasks related to drawings as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
Education:
- Currently enrolled in a 2-year mechanical drafting and Design program or a 4-year bachelor mechanical / biomedical engineering major.
Experience:
- Experience with computer aided drafting (CAD) systems.
Skills:
- Knowledge of Trigonometry and Geometry.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings.
- Software skills to include Microsoft Word, Excel and CAD
- Ability to use calipers, micrometers, and optical comparator.
Preferred Qualifications:
Skills:
- AutoCAD and SolidWorks
- SolidWorks 2013 or higher training.
- SolidWorks Product Data Management (PDM)
- Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
Success Factors / Abilities
- Work with a dynamic product development team to develop and maintain re-usable surgical instruments and single-use medical devices.
- Develop drafting, engineering and product design skills working within a FDA and CE compliant design control process.
- Gain knowledge of FDA Quality Systems including cGMP and Design Controls, ISO 13485 requirements.
