About the Board of Animal Health (BOAH):
BOAH operates under the direction of an 11-member board of animal industry professionals to:
• Protect Hoosiers' investment in animal agriculture, wildlife, horses and companion animals.
• Protect public health by preventing and controlling the spread of animal diseases, such as rabies, which pose a threat to people.
• Maintain a vital link in a safe food supply through the state meat and poultry and dairy inspection programs.
• Help people and their animals who are victims of large-scale disasters such as floods and tornadoes.
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
Role Overview:
This position will conduct inspections in Southeast Indiana in an area that includes Franklin, Fayette and Wayne counties.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
  • Perform antemortem and postmortem (AM & PM) slaughter inspections of livestock and poultry in official meat establishments.
  • Inspect, evaluate, and verify establishments comply with humane handling and non-ambulatory animal regulatory requirements.
  • Verify meat plants' Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) and pathogen reduction programs comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Inspect slaughtering procedure and verify carcasses comply with HACCP zero tolerance and BSE specified risk material [SRM] requirements.
  • Properly collect, identify and submit samples for animal disease control programs as prescribed from designated animals presented for slaughter.
  • Evaluate and verify meat plants' handling procedures, formulations, and production of meat and poultry products comply with the plant's SSOP and HACCP plans.
  • Conduct reinspection of carcasses, meat products (during processing and in storage), and returned product for proper identification or labeling, evidence of mishandling, contamination or adulteration.
  • Monitor and evaluate pest control programs.
  • Evaluate the acceptability of all chemicals and ingredients used in the processing of meat or meat products.
  • Check products for proper labeling and stamping, review and assist in the submission of label applications to central label approval.
  • Assist in the training of other inspectors and agency personnel.
  • Collect, properly identify, and maintain a chain of custody of samples as required.
  • Record activity and interact with the Public Health Inspection Service (PHIS) system.

What You'll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:
  • Thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations regarding slaughtering, preparing, and curing of meat and meat products.
  • General knowledge of ante mortem/postmortem inspection techniques and the proper use all issued inspection equipment
  • Working knowledge of Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure (SSOP), Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP), Public Health Information System (PHIS) and sanitary dressing procedures for assigned plants.
  • General knowledge of normal and common variations of behavior, physiology, and anatomy of livestock animals
  • Ability to conduct inspections in accordance with available guidelines.
  • Some knowledge and ability to conduct procedures for collecting samples.
  • Ability to enforce regulations against the producers of adulterated and misbranded products.
  • Some knowledge of formulas used in meat and meat product preparation.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

You must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment:
  • Be willing to travel with an appropriate accommodation.
  • Successful completion of a state or federal Meat Inspector training program.
