GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
To support the professional growth of mathematics teachers through collaborating with teachers and administrators to develop more effective mathematics teaching practices that allow students to reach the highest possible standards. To enhance mathematics instruction by strengthening classroom teachers' understanding of mathematics by sharing research that addresses how students learn mathematics. Works with Curriculum Specialist to provide professional learning to teachers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

- Provide coaching to the classroom teacher in the form of extended cycles consisting of developing a goal, co-planning, collaborating in the classroom, and reflecting on student outcomes and instructional growth.
- Collaborate with the building level administration, building level staff, and division mathematics leadership in the development and implementation of programs and strategies for the improvement of student achievement in mathematics.
- Provide building level leadership and support to teachers and paraprofessionals to increase their content and pedagogical knowledge in mathematics.
- Collaborate with teachers to review and further develop mathematics curriculum materials, pacing guides, and instructional plans to enhance the success of students and teachers and provide coaching to support the implementation.
- Develop and present ongoing professional learning opportunities for teachers at the division, school, and grade level.
- Engage in research-based professional learning and apply learned practices in the areas of coaching and mathematics instruction.
- Monitor various forms of documentation and records regarding mathematics instruction and learning to measure the impact of coaching cycles.
- Assist the principal and other members of the leadership team to promote a coaching culture in the building where teachers engage in coaching cycles to grow in their instructional practice.
- Assist the principal and other members of the leadership team to offer professional learning opportunities for teachers which may include: team coaching, modeling effective teaching techniques, learning strategies, and formative assessment strategies.
- Assist the principal and collaborate with teachers to analyze data and formulate plans to improve students' understanding.
- Assist with curriculum writing and development.
- Work with division mathematics leadership to identify new resources to support innovative instruction.
- Meet with school leaders to assist with the development of School Improvement goals.
- Adhere to policies and regulations as outlined in federal and state laws and School Board Policies and Procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; work cooperatively with all staff members to plan and implement appropriate mathematics instructional programs; assess individual needs and performance and to use the results to inform instructional planning; develop and present high quality and in-depth mathematics professional development for teachers and relate positively with parents and community representatives.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective time management and organizational skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of: mathematics content and the ability to identify and use appropriate pedagogical skills; the development of mathematical understanding and mathematical proficiency; current theory and research-based practices in mathematics instruction; current researched based mathematics curriculum programs and in a wide variety of assessment strategies; standardized tests and procedures in developing intervention plans for diverse populations of students.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Required: Have a current (or be eligible for) a Virginia Teaching License, with an endorsement in Middle School mathematics (Middle School coaches) or mathematics (Middle School or high school coaches).
Provide evidence of significant participation and implementation into practice of research-based professional growth opportunities in mathematics and mathematics education.
Have at least five years of successful full-time classroom teaching experience with grades 6 - 12.
Have experience working with multiple grade levels and differentiated instruction.
Have experience in providing professional learning in mathematics content, mathematics instructional strategies, and using assessment to inform instruction.
Preferred: Master's degree with K8 Mathematics Specialist Endorsement.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
