Job Summary
Luna Labs is seeking a creative and motivated Research Associate to contribute to fast-paced research focused on the development of existing and new materials technologies. Current areas of development in the Materials Research Group include corrosion resistant and multifunctional protective barrier coatings, polymeric composites, inorganic ceramic materials and electromagnetic signature management materials. It is desired that the candidate will have a background in one or more of these areas and will develop new skills by contributing to technology development, experimental design / execution, and new idea generation. The candidate will perform general technical assistance on a variety of currently funded materials programs and will be expected to conduct exploratory research and development efforts to help establish additional materials research and development (R&D) efforts.
Duties and Major Responsibilities:
• Perform experiments and procedures within a lab setting including thermal, physical, and analytical testing and analysis
• Maintain and operate laboratory equipment
• Record, store, summarize, interpret, and analyze raw data for timely technical report writing, and develop new methodology as necessary under direct supervision
• Support early product development through literature reviews, sourcing of equipment, components and supplies, and assemble systems and prototypes for ongoing research
• Write clear, concise, and timely technical summaries with analysis of data to document significant results
• Keep a complete laboratory notebook of work performed
• Demonstrate and promote both laboratory and office safety
• Utilize current technology to accomplish tasks on projects and to solve routine technical problems
• Assist the transition of new technologies into product concepts, prototype design, and commercialization.
Minimum Qualifications:
• BS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Function well in a fast-paced and team-oriented R&D environment
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong commitment to quality and attention to detail
• Excellent communication, technical writing, analytical, and interpersonal skills
• Desire and ability to understand the technical approach within the context of the application
• Experience in laboratory research
• Ability to support several disparate programs in parallel.
Due to government contracting regulations, U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is a firm requirement.
