Job Summary:
The College of Natural and Computational Sciences at HPU is looking for a part-time Marine Mechanic. This role's primary responsibilities are to perform duties and tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of the University's inland/near coastal oceanographic research vessels to ensure operational readiness of the vessels and auxiliary equipment.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Hands on experience maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting major vessel systems including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, navigational and communications systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot and maintain diesel and gasoline marine engines
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics
  • Ability to pass drug and alcohol screening tests as mandated by appropriate licensing authorities
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving abstract

Desired Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited university or college relevant to area of responsibility
  • Additional hands on, related training in a maritime or vocational school
  • Knowledge of maintenance, operation and repair of pumps, compressors, generators, winches and other equipment common to research or similar vessels.
  • Ability to design, fabricate and install parts and systems as necessary to meet the requirements of a small research or similar vessel
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to work with precision
  • Ability to visualize concepts presented verbally and in rough sketches
  • Ability to follow an activity, project, or plan of action through implementation

Other Qualifications:
  • Must be available to work on weekends, and evenings and extended hours as necessary
  • Able to work in a non-stable environment (i.e., pitching, heaving, rolling decks); in rain, hot sun, or strong winds.
  • Must regularly walk, bike and/or travel by skiff to the worksite.
  • Requires physical wherewithal and the ability to stand, utilize hand-eye coordination, and pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have reliable transportation to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Minors on Campus policy
  • Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU's winter break, if necessary
  • This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
Key Responsibilities:
1.Carries out preventive and corrective maintenance of University research vessels (75%)
  • Inspects vessel systems and equipment to identify malfunctions or other problems
  • Conducts repairs to vessel machinery, engines, generators, shipboard systems, electrical systems, etc.
  • Performs repairs and approved modifications to engineering systems and other mechanical systems
  • Carries out regular maintenance routines and special projects of sanding, painting, caulking and sealing to maintain the vessel's structural integrity and appearance
  • Designs, fabricates and installs parts and systems as necessary to meet the requirements of a small research vessel
  • Performs routine cleaning of the vessel's interior spaces and exterior surfaces
  • Actively participates in the semi-annual dry dock maintenance

2.Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance program for marine engines, systems and related marine equipment (20%)
  • Responsible for keeping logs, records and reports of all maintenance projects scheduled, in progress and completed
  • Selects and secures parts, supplies and equipment for the vessel in accordance with university purchasing regulations

3.Performs other related duties as assigned (5%)
  • Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
