Purpose of Role
Manual Lathe/Engine Lathe This position requires judgement to plan & perform normal range of operations requiring tool setting and machining with a Manual Lathe. This position requires application of established machining procedures that may affect quality of work. This position is a 2nd Shift role.
Objective & Measurement
Including but not limited to:
- Set up and operate Manual Lathes to perform a series of repetitive machining operations, such as turning, boring, threading, or facing of metal work pieces such as casting, forgings, & bar stock according to specifications, methods sheets, standard sheets and knowledge of turning procedures.
- Reads blue prints, job orders, method sheets, and standard charts for such specifications as dimensions, tolerances, and tooling instructions, such as type of holding fixtures, cutting speeds, feed rates and cutting tools to be used.
- Positions & secures tools in holders using wrenches.
- Lifts workpiece manually or with hoist & positions & secures it between lathe centers, in chuck or in holding fixture, using wrench or placing it in automatic loading mechanism.
- Moves controls to set specified rotation speeds, feed rates, & depth of cuts.
- Observes machining operation to detect malfunctions or excessive tool wear.
- Verifies conformance of machined work to specifications using fixed gauges, calipers, & micrometers.
- Changes worn tooling wrenches.
- May compute such date as dimensions, rotation speeds, feed rates, & machining times using knowledge of shop mathematics & metal properties.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job knowledge/Education and Qualifications
- A minimum 5-10 years' experience in the set up and run of all manual machines.
- Knowledge of a wide variety of metals and their properties as related to machining.
- An AA in Industrial Technology or equivalent is required.
- Ability to read and write.
- Basic math.
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, musical notes, etc.) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
- The incumbent should have knowledge of the following software: Basic Computer Knowledge.
- The work may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent lifting, pushing, or pulling of heavy objects < 50 pounds. The work involves moderate risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, moving equipment (i.e., forklifts, overhead cranes), rotating equipment or machines. Routine use of personal protective equipment is required and adherence to all safety precautions.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. In certain areas of the facility personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required, including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes, and ear plugs.

Wage Range: $25.00 - $35.00 per hour
