The SCA's Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City's approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.
Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description Summary
The Managing Engineer reports to a Director of Architecture and Engineering and is responsible for the planning, implementation, and oversight of major, complex and varied school construction projects to ensure that they comply with professional standards, and meet schedules and requirements.
Job Description
Responsibilities include:
Level A
o Guide interdisciplinary teams assigned to projects.
o Coordinate architectural and engineering design activities related to the new project in the design phase.
o Ensure adherence to the project schedule, budget, codes, and/or SCA standards.
o Participate in day-to-day operations to address and resolve specific managerial, operational, and administrative problems and inquiries.
o Perform managerial functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, making decisions about design-related services and materials, and/or making recommendations regarding personnel selection.
o Participate in meetings on issues relating to departmental and interdepartmental functions of the department/unit.
o Perform related duties, as assigned.
Level B
o Supervise staff, Engineers, Architects, and/or consultants assigned to projects.
o Manage technical resources, guides interdisciplinary teams assigned to departmental projects, and participates in the development of the technical resources required to properly scope and design projects.
o Provide technical oversight and guidance to teams in the development of the various design projects to meet project requirements in alignment with scope.
o Conducts quality assurance to ensure adherence to SCA standards, design specifications, and codes.
o May assign work to team members, and addresses and resolves complications that arise during the design project.
o May act on the behalf of or in the absence of the Studio Director and assumes greater responsibility for projects.
o May act as Deputy Director.
o Performs specific duties based on assignment to a department, division, or unit within the SCA.
o Performs related duties, as assigned.
o May perform duties of a Managing Engineer - A.
Minimum Requirements:
- A valid New York State license as a Professional Engineer. Current New York State license must be maintained for duration of employment; and
- Level A: Eight years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Engineer; four years must have been as a project leader, project engineer or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
- Level B: Ten years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Engineer; five years must have been as a project leader, project engineer or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.

Work Experience
Eight years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Engineer; four years must have been as a project leader, project engineer or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. Electrical: must have eight years of full time paid post-licensure experience in electrical work as a Professional Engineer; four years must be as a project leader, project engineer, or major project contributor; or a comparable level of responsibility. Green & Sustainable Technology: must have eight years of full time paid post-licensure experience, including four years of green & sustainable design as a Professional Engineer and accreditation in green and sustainable design; four years must be as a project leader, project engineer, or major project contributor; or a comparable level of responsibility. Candidates for the Green & Sustainable Technology specialty must present evidence of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credentials (i.e., LEED Accredited Professional [LEED AP]).Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning: must have eight years of full time paid post-licensure experience in heating, ventilation, & air conditioning work as a Professional Engineer; four years must be as a project leader, project engineer, or major project contributor; or a comparable level of responsibility. Plumbing & Drainage: must have eight years of full time paid post-licensure experience in plumbing & drainage work as a Professional Engineer; four years must be as a project leader, project engineer, or major project contributor; or a comparable level of responsibility. Structural: must have eight years of full time paid post-licensure experience in structural work as a Professional Engineer; four years must be as a project leader, project engineer, or major project contributor; or a comparable level of responsibility.
