The SCA's Architecture and Engineering Department is responsible for development of scope, design, and construction documents for new school buildings, additions, lease conversions and renovation work of existing schools for New York City's approximately 1.1 million students. Our projects are intentionally and thoughtfully designed; positive impact design is at the forefront of all our projects.
Our In-House studio is a multidisciplinary practice that is responsible for designing some of the largest and most complex schools in our 1,500+ school portfolio as well as renovation work to existing schools. Our other two studios manage external consultants from design inception to completion. Our three studios are comprised of talented architects and engineers who are driven to deliver high quality custom designed, sustainable, and resilient public schools.

Job Description Summary
The Managing Architect is responsible for the planning, implementation and oversight of major, complex and varied school construction projects to determine conformance with professional standards and to ensure that the project meets relevant schedules and requirements.
Job Description
Responsibilities include:
• Manages technical resources, guides interdisciplinary teams assigned to departmental projects, and participates in the development of the technical resources required to properly scope and design projects.
• Ensures adherence to the schedule, budget, and/or standards.
• Participates in day-to-day operations to address and resolve specific managerial, operational, and administrative problems and inquiries.
• Performs managerial functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, making decisions about design-related services and materials, and/or making recommendations regarding personnel selection.
• Participates in meetings on issues relating to departmental and interdepartmental functions of the department/unit. - Performs specific duties based on assignment to a department, division, or unit within the SCA
• May supervise lower level architects and /or engineers; may act on the behalf of or in the absence of the Studio Director.
• Attends Capacity meetings to document technical and procedural issues, in order to facilitate a more efficient and effective flow for standards needs and questions. Decisions arising out of the follow-up may result in timely issuance of new standards/procedures which will benefit our design community.
• In collaboration with the Design Studios, as well as outside experts, research new materials and products to align with agency and departmental goals.
• Fosters inter-studio communication and collaboration to review and discuss Design Requirements and other Standards for updates and coordination.
• Considers and leads interagency work to improve/update/reconsider regulatory requirements related to schools.
• Attends the periodic Technical Discipline meetings regarding technical standards, project needs, and lessons learned. Develop related resource documentation and training for technical staff.
• Coordinates "Lessons Learned" for Capacity and CIP projects, and survey A&E staff for ideas and issues.
• Manages the process of updating A&E departmental policies and procedures.
• Assists TSS in facilitating and coordinating the GSG process with the A&E Design Studios.
Minimum Qualifications:
• A valid New York State license as a Registered Architect (RA). Current New York State license must be maintained for duration of employment; and
• Level A requires: Eight years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Architect three years must have been as a project leader, project architect, or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.
Level B requires: Ten years of full time progressive experience as a Registered Architect; five years must have been as a project leader, project architect or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience.

Level A: $105,159 - $155,000
Level B: $122,358 - $170,348

Work Experience
Eight years of full time progressive experience as a Professional Architect three years must have been as a project leader, project architect, or major project contributor or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. A Master's/Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture or a related field may substitute for two of the years of full time experience, resulting in FIVE years of full time experience required for Managing Architect A, THREE of which must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity. A Master's/Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture or a related field may substitute for two of the years of full time experience, resulting in SIX years of full time experience required for Managing Architect B, FOUR of which must have been in a supervisory or managerial capacity.Selective Certification for Special Experience: Green & Sustainable Technology: must have seven years of full time paid post-licensure experience, including two years of green & sustainable design as a Professional Architect and accreditation in green and sustainable design; three years must be as a project leader, project architect, or major project contributor; or a comparable level of responsibility. Candidates for the Green & Sustainable Technology specialty must present evidence of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credentials (i.e., LEED Accredited Professional [LEED AP]).
