Manager of Volunteer Engagement

Full-Time

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), founded in 1920, is located in the heart of University Circle, five miles east of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Considered one of the finest institutions of its kind in North America, the Museum offers an incredible visitor experience, attracting roughly 275,000 visitors ayear.

Building on its strong foundation of excellence in education and research, the Museum is poised to transform itself. CMNH will invite and engage a broader audience in the exploration of science and the natural world by revolutionizing the way it presents natural history. The Museum has currently launched a capital campaign to support a dramatic renovation and expansion of its facilities and exhibits. This ambitious plan will position the Museum to play a leading role in regional and national efforts to improve science education and increase scientific literacy.

The CMNH is seeking a dynamic, creative and energetic individual who is passionate about the Museum and its mission; exhibits strong organizational and administrative skills; is looking for new challenges; and enjoys working in an enthusiastic and fast paced environment.


Job Summary:

  • The Manager of Volunteer Engagement is responsible for strategizing and executing initiatives to enhance Volunteer Engagement, visitor experience, and accessibility at the Museum. This role will serve as an effective member of the leadership team and think strategically in a fast-changing environment. The position will respond to all volunteer-related issues or areas of concern.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Grow and diversify the volunteer program to reflect the community by developing and maintaining relationships with organizations and networks, representing the Museum at community events and volunteer fairs, and managing volunteer applications to enhance volunteer recruitment efforts.
  • Implement comprehensive communication, training, retention, and recognition strategies for volunteers, aligned with scientific literacy, elevated customer service, and diversity and inclusion values, to encourage high levels of volunteer confidence and satisfaction.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures, Museum-wide volunteer policies and proactively investigate and address concerns or feedback, while providing recommendations for improvement.
  • Assist with posting open positions, manage recruiting efforts, and work with Human Resources to ensure compliance with necessary paperwork, background checks, and appropriate onboarding.
  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate volunteer opportunities into programming and events and coordinate volunteer scheduling and assignments to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Implement, monitor and evaluate volunteer program feedback mechanisms, adjusting to accomplish program goals when necessary.
  • Develop and manage volunteer program budgets, including tracking expenses and reporting on financial performance.
  • Serve as a liaison between volunteers and Museum staff, addressing concerns and facilitating communication channels.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Visitor Experience to support departmental goals and initiatives.


Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited university or college or equivalent work experience in a related field and/or three (3) to five (5) years of Volunteer Management experience.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills in a Windows operating environment, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of volunteer management software systems for tracking and managing volunteer data.
  • Familiarity with volunteerism trends and best practices in the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience in developing and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within volunteer programs.
  • Previous experience in grant writing or fundraising efforts to support volunteer program sustainability.
  • Ability to work Monday through Friday evenings, and weekends as required.

  • Professional demeanor, tact, diplomacy, discretion and good judgment; able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to show team spirit and treat team members with cooperation and respect; able to share useful information with team members; able to support and comply with decisions made by senior team.
  • Able to model effective results-oriented decision-making and inspire staff through success.
  • Able to be an outstanding ambassador for the Museum
